I've been told IB Math Studies is essentially a Precalculus class. Is this true? Will taking Math Studies prepare me for Calculus as much as a precalc class? If precalc is not offered, is Math Studies a good alternative?

NOT true. Take precalc.

I take math studies and trust me it will help you.

What I have done in 1 and 1/2 semesters makes my education the same as a sophomore in college.

You study calc, not pre-calc but calc in math studies. The only thing is that pre-calc is all about preparing you for calc, while math studies is more than just that we have much, much more. But math studies having more stuff besides calc might not be what you need.

Math studies is for students who aren’t planning on studying advanced math, but just have to take a minimum. Precalc actually prepares you for calc and is much more appropriate in that respect.

^
The whole point about it being for students who do not plan to study math in college is true. But it gives you great foundations for calc.

OP:
do you plan to do calc senior year? Or in college? If you plan to do a math or science related major in college then Math studies is not for you. But if you simple want to get all the foundations of math down then do math studies.

Math Studies is not pre-calc or calc.

it is not pre-calc. But you study calc in math studies. It is one of the topics learnt.

Perhaps my teacher went into more depth than most teachers should butwe spent a lot of time doing it.

I really dont want precalc for personal reasons…so would math studies be a good alternative in soph year? Would it prepare me for a AP Calculus course year after?

No.

Calc is just one unit. There is so much more in IB math studies (i.e. finance, statistics, trig etc).

If you want a great foundation for calc you will need pre-calc which will help you focus on what real calc wants.
