hi guys, i am in 10th grade. I will have to make a decision soon to take IB or not. If i dont take IB, i will probably take AP BIO , AP Eng, AP Physics, and AP spanish. So which should i take?
I plan to go to Wharton. Give me some good advice folks.

Don't take the IB if you cannot stand the pressure of having tons of homework. Go to AP if you want to challenge yourself ONLY on the courses you prefer. I personally go to IB.

Be ready for intensive work load if you were to go to IB.

oh never, i love the work =D. I just want to know which is better for Wharton. Do they like IB or AP better?

They have no preference. I would bet that it is more familiar with IB, since it is an American university. Of course, that is my own opinion. I would say IB and AP both show your passion, your risk-taking behavior and your course rigor.

By the way, are you turning grade 11 or 10?

IB is a lot of work, but if you can handle it, then go for it. If you don't do full IB then you should take a mixture of AP and IB courses to show that you challenged yourself as much as possible.

Oops just to make some revision, I think American universities would be more familiar with AP, not IB.

Well, i would like to take mostly IB because then All my classes will be multiplied by 1.2 ( the multiplier for gpa for my school). That will increase my rank and gpa. Hmmm, and i m going into 10th. Well, yeah. I need to increase my gpa =[. I go to Philadelphia's Top High School. So yeah. I need the IB since the school is so competetive and i ll need a high rank. But i do like the mixture idea where i take some Ap classes and the rest IB. I can stand the work load.

DO AP

I DID IB AND I HATED IT. we didn't have a choice at our school. DONT DO IB. DONT DO IT. if you do the IB diploma your life will suck until the end of senior year. there is no such thing as a "second semester senior" for IB diploma students.

I disagree. I did IB and had a totally slack senior year and still got the diploma. Just try to do your CAS hours earlier, write a really bad EE (1500 words should do), and do minimal studying for the exams, or at least the SL ones because you can't get credit anyway.

IB, in the end, is not worth it. Honestly. I'm not even kidding you. It's harder than AP and not as compatible, and it's expensive. You can, at most, get roughly three credits under IB due to the HL tests, and you have to have the classes behind them, whereas in AP you can just take a bunch of tests and score credit for them. I do not think IB gives you that much of a boost over AP either.

IB is just a big, life-draining program that does nothing for you. It has noble goals, but the execution is off. By senior year, college admissions have already run their course, and nobody gives a rip by the second semester. Everyone slacks on their tests, gets their diploma, and goes to college. Everyone's so tired and they just want the year to be over with. IB is just a big stress haze.

Four APs is probably rigorous enough to be comparable to IB. No admissions officers will scoff at that schedule. On the other hand, if APs aren't weighted, class rank IS important..

As someone who has experience with both, four AP's is not even close to IB IMO

all of this sounds really scary. but since IB is so much harder than ap then wouldn't it look better to penn? i have the choice of taking it and i'm leaning towards takin it....

Yea 4 ap's is not anywhere close to full IB, padfoot doesn't know what he/she is talking about.

Do IB. its not regular high school, its not fun all the time, but its a good experience. esp when u get that diploma. and you can still hate the IBO for what it did to you.

APs are alright, i guess. If you're stuck, try both and decide - u can always quit IB and take lots of AP classes.

ok then....

The AP credit page. See what classes/tests can get you credit, and which ones are worthless.

As to AP vs. IB, I'd say that Penn values the AP's more. They also know that some of the APs (Psych anyone? English?) are a load of bull.

IB. It will change your life and you will not regret it.

My DD just started senior year of IB, absolutely loves it! She has said all along that it is all "time management", and not procrastination. She swims for a year round club 3 hours/day, 6 days/wk, still has time for "some" social life in addition to her studies. She went to gov hnrs. for 6 weeks this summer, and still managed to annotate 3 books (approx 800 pages between all three) in the three weeks before school started. These days when admissions are looking for "well rounded kids", you can't beat IB for showing that as opposed to selective AP classes, IMHO.
