IB + premed help please!

Hello,

I'm a third year non-science major planning to switch to IB. I'm basically starting all over aside from breaths, and I'm trying to fulfill all the requirements as quickly as possible--1 year at a CC for LD and 1 year at Cal for UD. This is my current plan:

@ CC:
Summer '12: Bio 1A/L + Chem 1A/L
Fall '12: Physics 8A + Chem 3A/L + Math 1A
Winter '12: Math 1B (for med school req)
Spring '13: Physics 8B + Chem 3B/L + Bio 1B

@ Cal:
Summer '13: 2 UD electives (Psych 110 + PH 162A) OR 1 elective + IB 131/L
Fall '13: 2 IB + 1 humanities + hopefully research OR 3 IB + 1 humanities
Spring '14: 3 IB + hopefully research

Is it a manageable workload? Or am I being too naive about science classes? I feel quite anxious and behind as I'm resetting almost all my college work and career plans and I'm also worried about the money… At the same time, I'm concerned that rushing things too much could destroy my GPA and health and deprive myself of time for extracurriculars and building relationship with profs. I want to go to med school and also take advantage of my remaining years of college, so extracurriculars are very important to me, as well. Would it be more worthwhile to spread out things and take things more slowly?

And there are also MCATs… I'm willing to take a year off after graduation to recharge and take the exams, but would you advise to get them over with while in school?

Any advice would be helpful and very much appreciated. Thank you in advance!!

How many courses do you have left in your major? If not that many, perhaps this schedule can complete both your major and pre-med courses in less time, assuming you are a current Berkeley student who is in the sixth semester:

Summer: Chemistry 1A/1AL, Math 1A
Fall: Chemistry 3A/3AL, Biology 1B, Math or Statistics if needed, major course
Spring: Chemistry 3B/3BL, Biology 1A/1AL, Physics 8A, major course
Summer or Fall: MCB 102, Physics 8B, (and 2 major courses if Fall)

However, if your GPA is not really high already, your chances of getting into an MD school in the US are low. The schedule may also be time consuming, especially the semester with three lab courses.

Medical schools are also said to dislike seeing a lot of pre-med courses taken in the summer or at community colleges, though it may be hard to avoid unless you have room in your [unit ceiling](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/registration/unitceiling.html) to take extra fall or spring semesters.

You may want to look here[/url”>https://career.berkeley.edu/Medical/Medical.stm]here and ask your questions on the pre-med forum.

Is one year at a CC because of financial reasons?

I cannot speak for the upper div courses but I am a transfer student in mcb and have taken all my lower divs at a cc and can tell you that that schedule for a cc is doable. The addition of physics may make it a bit tough but definitely not impossible. You should be able to handle it.

I’m not sure about the pre-med courses taken at a cc rumor but do lower divs count in that category? Also if that was true then all transfer students would be at a disadvantage, which makes me believe it less but I don’t know.

When I was a medical student at a U.S. MD medical school we often discussed where we had done our undergraduate studies and I do not recall anyone ever mentioning that they had taken classes at a community college.
