I'm grade 11 attending an IB school in Queensland.
I want to go to university in US but I think I'm screwed because of my school.
Well, first... I was away for like 5~6 weeks from school because one of my cousin was on the verge of passing away and our family wanted to spend time with her. But this overlapped with the exam week and therefore I missed all my exams. Before I left, I arranged to do the exams when I come back. and I got back, but the teachers are ignoring me and they are telling me to get over it because it is already finished and my school report came out already. My school report is like N/A for 4 subjects and a C for ToK because I wasn't there. I also got B for my maths which I'm completely furious about because I got 100% on my last exam. The teacher 'assumed' that I would to bad on the exam that I missed just because other students struggled to get a good mark. Isn't this ridiculous? I was hoping to aim for the IVYs but I'm now completely screwed.

C for Tok is just ridiculous because I have never gotten a C in my life and it's going to screw everything up. ToK isn't even a subject so I'm not sure if universities count this.
When I apply for college, do I send away the report card itself? or do I just include the marks that I got on a separate paper? Do I even need to send away a copy of all my report cards? or does only gpa matter?

oh my god I don't know what to do. help me!!!

I wouldn’t consider this so huge a setback you have no shot at any Ivies. You still have a year to go and colleges wont automatically view a N/A as a C. When you apply to college, your school will provide a transcript listing your courses (the rigorous the better) and how you’ve performed in these courses (concentrating on your latter years). The fact that you’ve experienced misadventure in year 11 can be spun to your advantage (essay idea maybe?), an “upward trend” and overcoming adversity is always favourable.

I’ve looked at your other post and your ECs look fine; your awards are quite impressive. Assuming your SATs go well and the rest of your application package is sound (recommendations/essays) you have a decent chance for an Ivy league school.

Lastly, I wouldn’t be so fixated on the “time is running out” mentality, time is still in abundance. (Assuming you’re applying for Class of 2016) Good luck!

No! As BakOrz mentioned, you could actually use this misfortune to your advantage. What’s done is done. You can’t change the past, but you have the power and ability to change the future. Focus your attention on getting the best possible grades in year 12, in this way Colleges will see your potential. Keep up your EC activities, and I’d advise that you begin writing your College essays (hint: writing about your circumstances would make a great topic, especially if you include how you overcame it).

You should also ask your counselor elaborate on the N/As in the letter of recommendation that accompanies your school report.

N/A is actually a good outcome because it shows that the term was officially not completed. Much better than receiving Fs for missing your final exams.

Yup, the advice so far has bee correct. Your cousin who was on the verge of passing away can be turned into a great advantage, especially if you write an essay on it. Make sure you do well at school from here on out. everyone likes to see an underdog come out on top.

You should make sure to explain why you got the N/As and C’s in your transcript, get a school official to write a letter explaining.

Well…My dream college would be the HYPS, but it seems a bit…over the top. I’m interested in any of ivies really…otherwise, Australian National University it is.
