IB score required for Penn

I guess i would be considered an international student when it comes to applying for Penn. With regard to that, i was curious if anyone could shed some light on what is the average/minimum IB score that Penn requires for international students. Also, would it be more difficult for me if i am an Asian? Please PM me some replies...Thanks

minimum is definitely 46.

There are no benchmark entry requirements.

Haha...I think you mean 36 right? The maximum score that you can get on the IB is 45!!

There is no minimum. No idea about average.

Oh, i see, but based on your experience since it seems that you are from Penn, what is like the most common IB score you see of entering students because im really keen on entering Penn, and i would like to have a clearer picture of the academic standard of the students entering the school so i won't be wandering about aimlessly, and panicking at the last minute?

Look, Penn doesn't even know your IB score when you apply, so in a way what you get in the IB Diploma is not every relevant; the admissions officers will only get to see your predicted grades which are an opinion of your teachers. Having said that, you should know that Penn is one of the top American universities and, as such, the academic standard of the students entering the school is very high. I do not know the IB scores of most of the people I know at Penn who did the IB, but I can tell you I got a 43, a friend got a 42, at least two other friends got 40+. At least two other people I know didn't get above 40, but probably above 35. In any case, you should be aiming at 40+.

Imo, 38+
Wharton 40+
Add 2 pts to that if you are international

Official IB scores come out in July... so yea, the adcoms only have your predicted grades to base your IB scores on.

Yeah, the IB score didn't really have much direct influence for me. Everything's done after the fact, and you only get credit for HL tests. I honestly don't remember my IB score. It wasn't spectacular or anything. It was definitely below 40, but not by much (I think I had a 38). However, I admit I did not put much effort into my IB exams at all, because at the time I knew they weren't going to do much for me. So, I didn't prepare/study/etc. I watched movies and hung out with people instead of studying. I don't regret it a bit, either. When I went to my tests, I just sat down, totally chill, hammered them out without a care for how I did, and went about my business. It was a great feeling.

In other words, you can pull a Peter Gibbons like I did and still look forward to Penn. There's no minimum IB score at all. If you've been accepted, you're good to go. As long as your final grades don't sink down to some absurdly low levels, you're fine. Enjoy the rest of your year and don't stress out about IB too much.

haha...doubt if i will be able to relax like you, maybe its the asian mentality? :) Anyway, really curious cause i will be attending UWC soon and i heard various contradicting comments on the marks required...

Wow. attending a UWC eh.
So presumably you are a sophomore?
Where are you from and which UWC are you going to?

~legendofmax that is exactly what I am planning to do haha.. but I gotta get accepted somewhere first

~Hermann - work as hard as you can for the first 3 semesters of IB, until when your mid year report for 12th grade comes out, try and get a predicted score of 40> and I think your scores are fine then.

I may be wrong, but it may depend on where you come from also. If there are a bunch of kids who did very well in your region, and many apply for Penn, it may be against you. I heard from a friend that there's a bunch of kids from asia where the cohort had 75% scoring 40+. Just crazy! :X Then again, your scores aren't everything. Strong ECs, essays with a decently good score (wouldn't refer to a minimum) probably helps more than being the best with a perfect score and weakly supported ECs and essays.

i am an ib student too in canada and i have a question about predicted grades. in our school, we dont get official predicted grades till end of march/mid april so by then the admission decision is already made. because of this penn wont be able to get my predicted marks on the mid year report and will only get my ontario highschool transcript with my percentage grades up to the end of 1st semester. is there anything i can/should do?

haha...im will be attending the college in Italy come august cause i follow the asian education system so school starts in January instead of August, kinda cool...though i really wanted to go to the college in the US...Anyway, im from Singapore.
HiroShima11 - yes, there was a school in Singapore that kinda twisted the IB curriculum to their benefit so that all the students in the region scored an average of 40? i guess that means that all of them qualify's for the Ivy's? haha

not region, but the school inself...i heard that it is on par with schools like Sevenoaks and UWC as of now despite the fact that it just started the IB less than 2 years ago

haha hermann
you must be referring to ACS.
I do believe that they didn't exactly follow all the regulations laid out by the IB.
Not that I have doubts about Singapore students' ability, but it just seemed more like they are trying to tackle the system (looking for loopholes. ie. you are suppose to have coursework checked once; i have heard that they have repeated drafts just so they get it perfect) just to score highly.

spot on...the school is ACS...i guess the students are able to score so high as there is the help of the tuition teachers that can be found easily, despite the fact that the whole purpose of IB is to promote things like self-study?...

well imo, i think ib promotes more of a balanced learning - becoming leaders, inquirers and critical thinkers - from what i heard they tried to finish all their hours in a really short period of time etc etc. I would not be surprised if their TOK/Extended Essays were checked numerous times despite regulations set by the ib limits it to once only.

Since these are loop holes which ib cannot check on their students, it depends on the integrity of the students, teachers and school itself.

my teacher who was a chief examiner for bus who marked their paper said "there was a standard response" to certain questions, and those who score higher were simply those who elaborated better. haha and he added those students are going to be future managers, but not leaders, haha

and going back you do have a point, about doing things yourself - and really i think they prob. got excessive help.

I hate IB. That being said, I've heard that to be competitive (as an international) your minimum should be around 41-42.

I'm afraid of my math slipping to a 6 for my mid-year report. Gotta hold that 43 ;_;
