I'm an IB student at the STEM Academy in Pennsylvania. Currently I am taking 3 HL courses and 3 SL courses. HL: Math, Chemistry, and Biology SL: History, English, and Spanish. I'm debating on whether or not to take 4 HL's at the moment. I wish to change my SL history to HL history. I understand that SL and HL history are similar, but within HL history i'm stuck in the class for another half a year. In taking 4 HL's will that hinder my ability to get a diploma? When taking 4 HL's will i have a better chance to get into UPenn or JHU?

Hey
Having more HL’s is always great…however the IB diploma programme requires 3 HLs and 3 SLs so if you’re going for the diploma, you’re fulfilling the requirements and I don’t think you’re allowed to have 4 HLs and 2 SLs.
Also, the difference between HL and SL history seems minimal because it’s only paper 3, but from what I’ve heard from HL students…that’s actually a LOT of work!
Look into it if you want to, but I don’t think that diploma students can do 4/2.
Good luck with IB2!! :D

Hah, thankyou… I know for a fact that we’re allowed to do 4/2 (Hl/Sl), but i’m really worried about the workload as well as the complexity of my other exams… Am i doing wrong doubling up in sciences even though i’m trying to go into the medical field? and is the 4th HL worth it?
