Is IB worth it? Or will it benefit my applications since I’m in the program, taking AP’s, and honors?
It really depends on how well it fits you.
Broadly speaking, IB is a very structured curriculum (rather than an a-la-carte selection of courses) with specific offerings of higher versus standard level course options (HL and SL, determined by your school). IB courses are generally regarded as a lot of work.
If you are willing to do a lot of work, want a well rounded curriculum, your school offers HL in your best subjects, and you are not super-advanced in any subject (e.g. math, such as taking calculus in 10th grade or earlier), then IB may be a good option for you.
Will it help me more into any Ivy’s? Also I’m becoming a sophomore in high school and in my freshmen year I’ve gotten only one B. Will that affect my gpa by a lot. Also, how is your gpa seen by colleges. Do they look at only your first semester of junior year or?
If you are talking about the IB Diploma program, you need to look at the program carefully and see whether it works for you. It is highly-structured and a lot of work. Schools do like the IB Diploma program because it is rigorous and provides good preparation for college, but, basically, schools want to see that you are taking the most rigorous courses available at your school, so AP and honors are also good. It’s not really a “which one will help me get into X school” kind of question.
I have HS students on both tracks (IBD, and APs). IMO, IB is more rigorous and also more difficult to score well on the exams. Since IB is standardized across the globe, there’s no such thing as an “easy teacher.” They have strict curricula and grading rubrics. Although the overall structure is set, you have more opportunities in each class to explore an area of interest. I don’t know that colleges value IB more, but I think it’s better college preparation. APs would be preferable is you really want to challenge yourself in 1-2 areas (at our school most STEM-focused students do not do IB.)
