Ibanking, hedge fund, management consultancy

Any opportunities for ibanking/hedge fund/management consultancy? Are they easy to get? Do the firms recruit on campus and do they recruit heavily?

yes. had my goldman sachs interview yesterday.

Yes, there are opportunities for those. I don't know of any hedge funds that interview here. DE Shaw may have, but I can't recall. For mc: Bain interviews on campus here. Their founder is a Vandy alum. Neither BCG nor McKinsey interview on campus. McKinsey did have a resume drop and invited six or so students to interview in Atlanta for business analyst jobs. Those aren't the only options for management consulting, but they are the most prestigious if you care about that.

As for investment banking, I can't remember exactly how many firms interview here. Off the top of my head I thought that GS, Deutsche, UBS, Lehman Bros, BofA, and Wachovia interview at Vandy.

I can't answer whether they recruit heavily at Vanderbilt, because it's relative. Firms from these industries recruit more heavily than at UT Knoxville. However, HYP are going to have more of those employers on their campus.

The positions are easy to get if you're qualified. There are many people who want ibanking jobs in NY but get shut out. It's not the case that everyone who wants these jobs will get one.

For instance, GS probably interviewed 30 juniors and if it's like last year, then maybe 1 or 2 will be invited to interview in New York. Goldman isn't the only investment banking employer and New York isn't the only place where you can be an ibanker.

What other schools are you looking at? I can try to give you an idea of how Vandy stacks up to them. I won't claim to be an expert since I've only experienced recruiting at Vanderbilt, but I have friends at similar schools and can ask them.

Cornell, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Duke, UIUC

Anyhow, I love Vandy, so be friendly.

If you love Vandy, then I'd go here. Go to the school where you'd be happiest. You'll do the best there.

Duke and Cornell should have better placement in the industries you mentioned. I think Notre Dame does pretty similarly. I really have no idea about Northwestern, although I bet it would be similar to Vanderbilt if not a little better. UIUC still does fine. People from there head to GS and McK in Chicago. If you want to head to NY, UIUC probably does not have much pull.

At none of these schools will you be shut out from a hedge fund, consultancy, or ibank.
