I’m looking at getting a laptop before I go off to university. I see that the ibook g4 comes with a free ipod right now, and with my student discount it will come out to be a very good deal. I’ve never owned a mac before but am willing to make the switch.

That said, I have some questions for people that have this laptop:
How is the screen? I’ve heard it is just ok…not the brightest and not really good viewing angles. The screen is very important to me…I’m looking for something as vibrant as an xbrite or trubrite.

How is the weight on the 14" ibook? (This is the size I’m looking at getting). Skip this one if you have a different size.

Over all, is it a nice looking laptop? (I’ve only seen pictures). Does it get dirty easily?

Can you customize keys in to media buttons? I listen to a lot of music, so this is something I’d like to have.

Speakers: terrible just like most laptop speakers?

Anything else you want to add that would be helpful!

My mom has this computer and I think it is just wonderful, although I'm getting a powerbook for college.
1. The screen is just fine, I do not have any specific knowledge of the two computer screens you are talking about, but working on the screen in the dark has never been a problem for me.
2. The computer weighs less than most college text books. I would have no problem carrying it around with me all the time.
3. It is a beautiful streamlined laptop. I think it's better looking than most PCs I've seen because of it's color. It doesn't get dirty easily but hers has a tendency to pick up dog hair, but that probably won't be a problem in college.
4. I have no idea on this one.
5. I think the sound quality is pretty good, but I don't do a lot with the speakers.
6. If you're going to get a Mac I highly recommend picking up Microsoft Office.

The IBook's screen is of fair quality. Much better than many other non-apple laptops on the market right now. I got a powerbook for college, and I find that the screen quality is a bit higher, but the difference is not steep enough to complain.

The IBook is very lightweight and very easy to carry around. It's a college student's dream.

I adore the look of apple's laptops. They are clean, sleak, and beautiful little machines. My powerbook stays very clean, and if I drop something on it, it's just a quick whipe with a cloth and it's gone. Friends with IBooks keep the laptop clean and tidy, and don't seem to have any major problems with nasty stains.

I'm not positive if you can do this with the IBook, but I would imagine you probably could. You should visit your local Apple Store and ask them about that. I've heard of people customizing their keyboards.

If you're used to rocking out to music on your computer, I would probably get some speakers you could hook up to the laptop when you're back at your dorm. I use the IMac Desktop in my room at home as a make-shift stereo sometimes, but only because the speakers are pretty darn great. I will be getting speakers for the powerbook, only because I might want to listen to music a little louder sometimes.

I second the Microsoft Office. Apple is an amazing company and the computers are just fabulous. I have had no complaints with my IMac desktop, and so far, I am utterly in love with my powerbook. Apple has great customer service and are always willing to help you out if there's a problem. Good Luck with your IBook!

I just got a G4! My first Mac and first laptop.

Haha, seems pretty good to me. Better than my other computers.

Oh my, it's sooooo light. I could throw it miles if I so wished. It's like styrofoam marshmallow light.

It's absolutely adorable. Cuddly. Cute wee apple. I fall asleep with it in my arms.

No clue. :///

Sound seems pretty good. It doesn't get very loud, but it does have a clearer sound than other laptops I've heard.

It rocks!!!! Camino seems to be a really good browser.

Screen is perfectly fine. You can always change the settings if you want

Its very light!

Its so pretty! I love my Ibook rubs it

Lol I dont know. I got mine Thursday so I havent explored that yet

Sounds fine to me. Very crisp

Download: Mozilla Firefox, Ipodrip (if you have an Ipod),
Conversation (if you use IRC), Adium (for your instant message applications)

Umm i am not sure what you mean lol but the ibook and most mac's are made for music if that helped.
5.Just like most Laptop Speakers, sept my toshiba was a tad louder

ipodrip, konfabulator,mozilla,Adium, Menumetters,Acqusition,Onyx, I use office:mac, its nice

It seems ok to me. I've never had a laptop before this one, so I didn't really know that moving the top around (up and down i guess) changes colors and things..but it does..lol dumb moment, moving on

It's not heavy at all. I compared it to the physics and bio books I used in high school, and it's lighter, so it definitely wouldn't be a problem to carry around.

Definitely the best looking laptop out there. The cute little apple on the top even lights up when it's on! aw!

I have no idea, sorry

Yeah, the speakers aren't the best. If you'll be listening to music, I'd recommend buying something different. I just got some Bose speakers. At the apple store you can buy these JBL speakers that are very cute--I have the matching iPod onstage speaker which has great sound.

Buy it! I switched from a PC too, and it really wasn't very hard at all. I'm so happy I bought this because it's much easier and straight forward to use.

I have a question about the ibook as well. I was planning on buying the powerbook for college but then i saw that they updated the ibooks, so now im considering buying the 14" ibook instead. My question is will it last me 4 years? Or will it become way too slow or worn down by the time I become a senior. I've always heard that the powerbook is the way to go for a longer life span but the ibooks price is more in my range.
