Thanks for circling back with your trip report! @LeastComplicated, what cruise did you do? Norway/Sweden are also on our bucket list, and I’m wondering if tying it all together might be a good option for us. Not sure H would like a week of outdoor sightseeing in the wind and rain!
Beautiful pictures @LeastComplicated ! Younger S and GF just got back last week from 8 days in Iceland. We were able to spend 1 day there in 2019 and we drove the Golden Circle - looks like that’s what you did. It’s the best sampler IMO for Iceland. But boy, do I ever want to go back for a longer period. Younger S’ photos were so amazing. And during their hikes, little horses would just walk up to them and want to be petted and loved on.
They did get lucky with their weather. It rained some, especially on the day they went horseback riding on the black beach, but otherwise not too much. We went on March 30 and there was snow everywhere!
Iceland waterfall is Gulfoss, crater is Kerid crater. Both are on the Golden Circle. Did you stop at Geysir, as well? Fridheimar, the amazing tomato greenhouse/Icelandic horse farm complex is also on that loop
It was on the Norwegian Prima with two stops in Iceland (boarding in Reykjavik), three in Norway, then Amsterdam, Bruges, and disembarking in Southampton UK. We really enjoyed it despite the weather.
Thank you! Yes we did the Geyser. I think the driver offered to stop at the tomato greenhouse place, but we were ignorant and said no thanks.
Love those pictures. My rainjacket was similar to yours, light blue! I also realized early on the pointlessness of doing anything with my hair except pulling it back, and wearing no makeup because it rubbed off on my hood and buff.
Leaving for an Iceland cruise in a week. Rethinking my clothes since the forecast is low50s and rain every day. I’m going to take my better, larger raincoat to layer more underneath. Sure hope that forecast changes!
One thing I noticed was that the weather is very changeable, so if it rains, it’s not raining 24/7 necessarily but in bursts. We spent some time layering and unlayering. So whatever you decide to bring (and yes, a waterproof outer layer is a must, as is a hat or headband and glasses to protect against wind), it should be easy to put on/take off. Umbrellas are a complete waste of time as the wind just destroys them in five minutes. Waterproof shoes/boots are a must. I wore Oboz hiking shoes and Dansko walking shoes with a Vibram tread. I brought all performance fabric wicking clothes and wool-blend socks as cotton just gets soaked and does not dry quickly. Don’t wear jeans. Hiking pants in wicking material are great, lightweight, and do not smell bad after a couple of days of wear. It’s so beautiful and I hope you have a great time.
This was exactly our experience with the weather and clothing in Iceland.
Thank you! I’m definitely on the right track. I have rain pants, hiking pants, oboz hiking shoes, hat, gloves, smart wool socks. Forecast improving: 50s, rain only a few days.
Thanks for all of this helpful information. I’ve got a day of work in Reykjavik in September and ShawWife and I thought she would join me and we would take a week in late September to explore.
I was in Iceland a few years ago in late September and had good, fairly mild weather. But, of course you never know with weather! Enjoy!
5 yrs ago we arrived in Iceland on Sept. 1. Got off the plane it was 45 degrees in early morning. Warmest it got over the next 9 days was lower 60s. It rained, we had glorious sunshine, we had fog----pretty much everything but snow.
DD is getting married in Iceland next September. My brain is doing a weird mashup of this thread and the various wedding threads.
