ID Applicants!

I don't think Rice uses the AI - i think that's just a CC thing. They take into account loads of other things besides grades. Don't worry!

AI is definitely not just a CC thing. I've read about it in many college admission books.

It's not a CC thing, but most schools don't use it. Traditionally, it is only used for athletes. Rice, like most colleges, uses a holistic approach to evaluating applicants. Thus, they're going to consider all aspects of the application, not just the quantitative components.

Thanks, and good luck to all of you who are applying!
Jenskate, I have enjoyed reading your informative posts. I have never visited Rice, and neither has my S. My H has, however, and was very impressed. S thinks it sounds like a place he'd probably like, so he applied ID. Time will tell...S is not into reading this board, but I have learned quite a bit from it. So thanks for all the info about Rice.

I think lots of colleges use their own version of the AI - but i don't really think that they use this particular formula necessarily.

Tabbyzmom - Oh, that was so sweet! You are so very welcome. If you ever have any questions that you'd like to ask me directly, feel free to e-mail me. I hope to see your son at Rice next year!

Thanx, Jenskate!

It may be hollistics, but for certain schools academics, grades, scores, rank do play a big part. Have you noticed that first and second rank have little over three times the acceptance rate than average?

Rank really depends on the type and size of the high school you come from. For example, my high school is rather large, 2,800 students or so, and this would be viewed differently in class ranking than another school.

But I got the impression that it was more about your course load than your class rank... eh, whatever floats their boat.

Sure, but the Rice application is a testament to the fact that Rice admission is not purely based on quantitative factors. Think about the box.

But the "box" is tricky because it's so subjective. They can't put a heavy weight on that because who is to say if it's better than anyone else's?

Unless you put rice in the box of course. I've heard from EVERYONE there that that is the ultimate worst thing to put in the box.

Sure. That's why it is only 54%, not 100%. Lindsey, you will get in Rice rather easily. Let us make a bet. If my prediction is correct - go eat 1 scoop of Ice Cream, and If I am wrong I will eat 1 scoop (I shouldn't be betting on food). Deal ??

Haha. I take ice cream very seriously. Nonetheless, I'll absolutely take your bet :)

OK you are on. Remember this will be on an honor code basis !!

i'd originally applied under ED, but switched to ID about 3 weeks ago... and to think i could be finding out in 2 days if i made it. too bad it's another 2 months :( anyways...

TX
engineering
i'm really not sure where rice stands on my list...either ways i'm only applying to max 3 schools
yes interview....went ok i think

gah so many 1500's!!

i agree. i feel so intimidated.

bsbllallstr8: i am applying to Rice because
(A) It is one of the best schools in the nation with a good pre-med program.
(B) It is in a place where i have never been, and it might be nice for a change to go somewhere hot all year (this is more like a bonus, not a reason)
(C) It is one of the cheapest private schools there is, and they are very generous with grants.
(D) Being from Idaho might help me get in.(although my friend is applying too, and he has a 1500,4.0UW,4.5W, SAT IIs above 750...)

Well, you better watch out for Texas weather. When we mean hot, we mean like 115 degrees hot. And the humidity in Houston is unbearable. However, all Rice buildings have AC so as long as you're inside during August and September, you'll be okay.

haha, hotter than southern california's weather?

I live in CT, I'll be up here enjoying the New England breezes during the summer :)
