I'd appreciate a Chance :)

Hiya, my name is Jorge Bonavente (George with a "J") and I was wondering if anyone could chance me for UMD,CP? They're my top choice, leggo terps! This is what I sent in with my Early Action Application:

Unweighted GPA: 90.91/100.00 Weighted GPA: 93.10/100.00
Class Rank: 43/331 (12.99%)
SAT: 1270 Combined, Reading (660) Math (610)
Residency: In-State
Ethnicity/Gender: Filipino(75%)/Chinese(25%)/Male

Strong resume and recommendation letters.

What sets me apart from others:

I attended the Young Scholars Program at UMD. It's a program where accepted (there's an application process) students take a 3-week transferable 3-credit course on campus as a "student" with a student identification number and the whole "college experience" shebang. I passed with an A. I was told that it would help my application since my name was now "in the system." To what degree, I haven't the slightest clue, but the experience was amazing and I would recommend it to anyone!

Possible Mistakes:

My biggest mistake was not getting recommendation letters from either of my professors at YSP.

My essays and short answer responses could have been considered "risky." My first priority was to be as unique as possible, and to do so I took advantage of my creative writing skills. The reader could end up thinking "This kid's got a wild imagination, great!" or "So...what?" I knew the bulk of my application was in the hard stats (GPA, SATs, Class Rank), so I figured I could really let loose here, and if it hurts me, I wouldn't think it would by much. I can go into greater detail if anyone wants.

I truly appreciate anyone's feedback. The wait till the end of January is way too grueling, and it'd be a great to have anyone knowledgeable in the UMD admission process give it to me straight. Thanks again!

Hi Jorge! I applied EA this year to UMD-College Park as well and am still waiting for a reply back from the school! Honestly, I can only try to ease your fear! My stats are very similar to yours and several of my UMD friends tell me that I am a shoo-in for the school! Your YSP seems really interesting and I believe it can definitely help! Hopefully we can be classmates next year!

Dude, yes! post them and if someone chances me, maybe they’ll see yours too. Is UMD your first choice?

You’re in the middle of the middle 50% for CR + M and your weighted GPA is cool. You’re from MD and I like the vibe of your writing and how you present yourself, but that will matter little to UMD on first look. They’ll make a call largely on those numbers, and you’ve probably a 50-50 chance. If your admissions officer has a little app on her screen that flashes every time a student from the YSP appears, I would be surprised. Pick up the phone and call the admissions officer and chat her up. Your writing suggests you’re a good communicator, so let the officer know about your YSP experience.

You won’t get a response from CP until very late January. They say by Jan 31 and they don’t mean Jan 24. Good luck.

Thanks for your input jkeil911! Yeah, the statistical research I’ve been doing says that I land about where you said, the very middle, but does that really mean I’ve only got about a 50/50 shot at it? Maybe that’s a question the admissions office can tell me. I’ll take your advice and give them them a call. And if you don’t mind me asking, what are your sources and experiences with UMD? Thanks again!

sent one S there 4 years ago and have a D waiting to hear. lots of time this year reading the tea leaves at UMD and a bunch of other places D is applying. Good luck.
