I'd love a chance

I'm Korean and go to a fairly competitive (though not cutthroat) SoCal high school that sends a handful of students every year to Berkeley and UCLA and some (but rarely) to Ivies or top privates. I plan to major in business or economics if there is no undergrad business school.

Stats:
GPA: 3.9 UW; 4.4 W
Class Rank: 4/536
SAT: 2330 (770 M, 760 CR, 800 W)
SAT II: 800 U.S. History, 770 Math IIC, 750 Literature, 750 Biology
APs (took all available): World History (5), Biology (4), U.S. History (5), English Language & Composition (5), Chemistry (4)

Senior Schedule:
AP Physics
AP Calculus BC
AP English Literature
AP Government
AP Economics
French 3

ECs:
* Varsity Baseball (3 years; 1 year JV)
* Varsity Swimming (4 years)
* Key Club (4 years)

Volunteering:
* 250 hours at a big hospital (filing paperwork, mopping the floor, do-everything-guy, etc.)
* 50 hours at local public library (shelving books, checking out books, reading to young children)

Schools:
HYPS
UPenn (Wharton)
MIT (Sloan)
Dartmouth
NYU (Stern)
Berkeley
UCLA
Carnegie Mellon
USC
UCI (safety)
University of Washington (safety)

Sorry if my list is too long! I'm primarily interested in HYPS and the business schools in parenthesis.

ECs are lacking. Are those really all you have?

I have some run-of-the-mill ECs, but they really aren't worth noting because I didn't stick with them for long due to time restraints. I thought this would be the biggest flaw of my application.

Well, you're right. I think it really hurts your chances at the top schools on your list.

I do think you'll get into UCLA and possibly Berkeley since you're in-state without a problem, though! Good luck :)

I'd say:
HYPS - No
UPenn (Wharton) - No
MIT (Sloan) - No
Dartmouth - No
NYU (Stern) - Maybe
Berkeley - Accept
UCLA - Accept
Carnegie Mellon - Accept
USC - Accept
UCI (safety) - Accept
University of Washington (safety) - Accept

So I have no shot at the ivies?

I'm a student just like you, so don't take my word as the end-all. I'm just telling you what I think. You don't have any leadership and you don't really have any significant ECs aside from sports and the hospital work.

Maybe found a business club at school this year?

I guess I could try, but it probably won't mean much this late. Darn, I was hoping someone could tell me I have a decent shot at HYPS.

Well, still throw your hat in the ring. You never know. I could be completely wrong though, so wait for other people to give you chances.

I'd say you have a small chance. Remember--I'm only one person. Wait for others to provide insight :)

Don't know if it helps a whole lot, but I left out a few things:

SAT: 2390 Superscore (800M, 790 CR, 800W)

Community College Courses:
Business Statistics (A)
Accounting 1 (A)
Accounting 2 (A)
Introduction to Business (A)

Do the community college courses count toward my GPA? I was always pretty unsure about this, but regardless I took those classes because I was genuinely interested in them.

I'd say you have a good of a shot as nearly every top candidate for top schools, but your ECs aren't impressive. Still, I'd bet you'd get into several schools on your list.

Good luck!

HYPS: 20%
UPenn (Wharton): 30%
MIT (Sloan): 35%
Dartmouth: 50%
NYU (Stern): 65%
Berkeley: In
UCLA: In
Carnegie Mellon: In
