I have narrowed down my list to two schools.
It’s probably going to be Boston University over NYU, because of the money. I have a full ride (or nearly a full ride 39K) from BU and only 16K from NYU.

BUT
I LOVE NYU!

From what I’m reading (especially the Duke vs. BU) and (Brandeis vs BU), it seems like BU sux. I know it doesn’t but I am disheartened by what some peoplea are saying.

Plus I don’t even like the Red Sox. Or baseball in general. LoL.

NYU is a great school. Rest assured BU does not s----. Many students troll these boards for the school they themselves attend and then bash the other school under consideration. You can often capture these posts by their one liners about school X being better than Z with little info on school Z to back that up. There are rarely students at Z and occassionally are rejected applicants.(sour grapes)

You can't go wrong with either school. They are similar in many ways. Our S chose BU over NYU because he wanted more of a campus and since he had never lived in a city before NYC seemed a little too overwhelming compared to Boston. So its a personal fit situation when you have schools that are in the same range and because an applicant chose to apply to both they must have liked something about each of them.

Enjoy NYU if that is where you end up. It has to be a genuine experience to be in NYC. Good luck. If you are courageous enough to apply to such urban schools you will probably be successful whichever school you choose.

New york rocks. But so do the red sox. But if you don't care for the red sox and want an amazing non school experience to go along with your school one, new york wont disappoint. I live in and around alot of the NYU dorms (especially the new ones) and its an awsome neighborhood.

As for academics, i'm hesitant to say that NYU is better because I want to go BU (see the thread i just started), but it may be.

My friend is in a VERY similar situation. She turned down NYU Stern for BU-SMG bc of the money (very similar to yours...16K at NYU and 30+ at BU) and she doesn't seem to be regretting it too much. We'll see come the fall.

Hey, yea i gave up NYU just this past tuesday to go to BU because of the money. I also wanted more of a community feel. I love NYC, but I'm sure I'll like Boston too. I'm from NJ, so it takes me about 40 minz to get to NYU, but 5 hours to get to BU. Despite all of this, I still chose BU for the experience. So hopefully I'll like it there. I think a lot of people are choosing BU over NYU because of the money. So dont feel like you're the only one. We've all done it. Go where you will be happy and where you're parents wont be in debt. This is why I chose BU.

I was waitlisted at NYU and was considering forfeiting my BU deposit if I'm taken off, but honestly, with the rapid rise of BU's reputation, in a few years there will be only a slight difference between it and a school like NYU.

The schools are more alike than different, although NYC is a bit bigger and busier. You don't say why you prefer NYU. NYC might appeal to the more independent type student. Yankee fans will hear a lot of crap over their 4 yrs but so what? Easy access around the city for both schools. Neither one really has any campus per se but friends at BU say the dorms give a sense of community. My d has spent a bunch of time in the area near NYU and there are lots of trendy restaurants, clothing stores, typical NYC street vendors, and photography studios (she does some modeling).

If you're the type to get out and explore the city, you should enjoy yourself at either location. Boston has easy access to New England, Cape Cod, skiing, etc. What are your non-academic interests? Both have good academic reputations. Probably better to hear from someone far from here to know if the national reputation really differs. The other thing to consider is availablity of internships. Some majors may have an advantage in one place over the other (for instance, finance oportunities may be better in NYC). Are housing opportunities better at one school over the other? Consider off campus housing costs... Then decide if it's really worth the extra cost.

Plus after Freshman year the NYU dorms are spread out and about 10-20 blocks from the classes. At least BU has a campus that is only shared with other students while NYU was just integrated into that neighborhood. I pick BU.
