Ideal Major for Robotics??

I'm very interested in the field of robotics, paticularly towards AI. I would also prefer to get to learn about both software and the hardware instead of focing on one, but after checking "Robotic Engineering", it seems to be more focused on production-line robots rather, which is not in my interest.

I was wondering if it would be best to do a EE + CS major like in MIT or a EE+CE double major, compared to only only one from which I can choose: Electrical; Software; Mechanical; and Computer Engineeriing.

As there are a wide range of options, i'm simply stuck on what major to choose, and gladly would take any help and advice.

Thanks in Advance.

Sounds like you’re not in college yet - if that is the case, I would take the first year to take both EE and CS courses. Then choose which one you like better, and major in that one and minor in the other one (or dump the other one altogether if it turns out you don’t like it as much as you thought).

I would do the following…

1) Look at the Robotics emphasis/options at about 10-15 top programs. Look at the courses names and the descriptions.

2) Make a list of all the courses (while noting when courses are the same) and make a count for each course.

Then you will get an idea of all the elective courses you need in order to specialize in Robotics and then figure which major should you take that would best accommodate your Robotics specialization.

You won’t need to double major.

Certain schools are known for their robotics education… just look over those :)

[The Robotics Institute @ CMU](http://www.ri.cmu.edu/)

This is one of the best.

To answer the base question: I’d say CompE or CS is the right major given your interest in the AI side of this. Probably CS…

In addition, I’ll note Michigan is getting pretty strong in the area. There are a number of recent faculty hires, including a senior person, that makes us pretty good.

http://www.robotics.org/content-detail.cfm/Industrial-Robotics-News/U-M-Robot-Team-Wins-International-Competition-and-$750000/content_id/2463</a> is a nice article. A lot of that was done by undergraduates.

In particular the heavy emphasis on AI here might match your interests. But the only pure robotics program here is at the Masters level.

CMU is outstanding in robotics

any cpe program with more than 1 robotics class

CMU has its annual robotics day LOL

Psychophysiology.
You’re looking to design the positronic brain.

we (unl) have a robotics day too. we also have a department robot project (similar to tekbot) that has racked up $4M in grants. however, our robotics focus overall is completely lacking

First experiment a few years with both EE, CompE, and CS classes. If you still like it at the end of your sophomore year, do computer engineering.

robotics is a mix of computer science, EE and mechanical. The mix of three is know as Mechatronics. I too am interested in this same field, i am going into either computer science or software engineering
