Ideas for a computer science project?

Hey there.
I am an international prospective student, currently thinking of applying to the US mainly, for the fall 2014 semesters. I will keep a few backup, but my target is the top 20 colleges in the US. As of now, my academic record is pretty good, but I am a bit lacking in extra-curricular activities. So, since I'm immensely interested in programming, I was hoping someone can give me some advice on any kind of projects I can take up which would really highlight my passion for it. My friend in high school who wants to study linguistics is doing a badass linguistic project analyzing reaction times of various people knowing multiple languages and highlighting the importance of scripts in the processing of information. The rate at which he is going, he is going to land up in an ivy for sure. I was thinking if I could do something like that too (but based on computer programming) to boost up my chances. Any ideas or suggestions?

Hardware or software
Web development or what? Please be more specific. Also ask websites like github it’s an open source site and u will get VER VERY VERY good ideas I did.

Um, I am mainly interesting in programming. So software, I’m guessing. Although I’ve never actually made a fully functional software, I guess I will be able to pull it off if it interests me enough.

Okay how advanced ru. Do u know any languages. If I asked u to write me code for tic tac toe could u do it? How good. Ps if u can’t do that there isn’t anything I can help u with. At this point just learn one language then move on from there. If u are trying to learn web development then the 3 obviously one initially. Also u seem to be under estimating the difficulty of the matter. Take an ap comp sci class if ur xchool offers it

I know Java. That’s it. I began learning C++ though, but I’m not at a very advanced level there. So basically I’m confined to java for this. If you’re asking me to write a program for a tic-tac-toe, I can write it, although the graphics part wouldn’t be very professional. I’m not under estimating anything. The thing is, if I get an idea now, I still have around 3 months to work on it. I guess that would be enough to overcome any shortcomings. But I have to find the unique idea first.

Adcoms can smell a project done for the sake of doing a project a mile away. I would go find yourself a person or group who is actually involved in providing a service and talk to them about what would help them. With all due respect, the programming piece is the easiest part. If you can demonstrate that you can listen, evaluate your client’s needs and then deliver that you will have a project worthy of attention–even if it isn’t the most sophisticated code on the planet.
