-I currently have about 150+ hours volunteering at a hospital.
- I am the president of my school’s programming club
That’s about it.
I was wondering if you guys have any ideas for extracurricular that are related to programming or computer science because I know that colleges care more that I do something I am passionate about.
Thanks!
It depends on what your school offers…Maybe check out your local library. Usually they have classes you could take or groups you can join for stuff like that. Or local community colleges might have stuff of the sort also. Just check bulletins. You could do a video game programming club. There was a class for that offered at my school a few years ago, but it wasn’t popular, so they stopped doing it.
Volunteer at hackathons. Organize hackathons. If you’re a girl, then there’s probably a “girls in computer science” organization at your local university. Talk to them and see what you can do. Teach classes, if you think you can. Robotics is another big thing.
Thanks for the suggestions. Do you also happen to know if just simply creating a website or an app count as an “Extra curricular”?
Depends. What kind of website? Will it be widely used? What’s the purpose? I mean, you can always put it on your apps–I think MIT even has a specific place for that stuff on theirs–but it’s more impressive if it’s, well, impressive.
If you like computer science, then you should think about joining a FIRST robotics team! It’s really fun, and it involves a lot of programming
Consider creating an app for your school. If you go to the app store you can find lots of apps that kids made for their high schools (Glendora High School, Miramar high, etc). It’s really simple (it just needs to have things like a school activities calendar, maybe the student portal login, the daily schedule, etc) but could be useful to students. If you’re good at programming it shouldn’t be to hard and will look unique. I’m not too good at programming yet but I’m actually hoping I’ll eventually be able to do this myself.
@PaperMonst3r Go to local organizations in your areas (i.e. charities, church, food pantry, fire department, environmental coalition) and offer to design and maintain a website for them (obviously they will pay the $15 or so for hosting but you will design and maintain it pro bono). I don’t see why anyone would turn you down, and it’s a great way to apply your passion as a volunteer activity.
Thanks for these suggestions! I will definitely take these into account
