Ideas for rising senior with 35 ACT, good ECs, challenging classes but less impressive grades

Just following up on this thread. I really appreciated everyone’s advice. Our second son’s early action application to tOSU was deferred (he found on 1/26), and while there’s still a chance of getting in, tOSU is out of the running for him. He ended up applying to and getting into University of Maryland Scholars (in state), University of South Carolina (still haven’t heard from Honors, but USC is also falling down on the priority list as it looks less and less likely that it’ll be in budget) and University of Alabama Honors (selected as a backup for Randall Research Scholars). He has stats that put him in Buckeye and Trustees scholarship territory at tOSU yet wasn’t admitted in early action so I don’t expect him to be awarded any scholarship money. Our older son, who is now in his second semester at OSU really likes it there! Go Bucks!

University of Maryland - $25,000 without scholarship which he probably will get.

U of Maryland makes sense. Maybe Case (Cleveland)? Northeastern (Boston)? It would be worth asking the PLTW teachers for ideas.

Anyone interested in Rowan the virtual tour is worth a few minutes. I know facilities don’t make an education but these are really, really nice for a school with a reasonable cost and acceptance rate.

He should get quite a bit of money at WVU.

If he didn’t want to take AP English, I don’t know how much value taking the AP exam is.
What was his score on the exam junior year?

He should take English composition in college, and not place out of it. Even as an engineer he will need to write.

Final follow up: son’s OSU deferral switched to waitlist in late February. Fortunately South Carolina came thru with in state tuition plus $2000–a nice surprise after he didn’t get into Honors College there. After a long period of him showing no preference between Alabama, Maryland and SC, after the final admitted student day on Saturday he has committed to South Carolina. It’s been a tad stressful but I think we are all happy with the outcome. Our oldest continues to thrive at OSU.

@StrGzrMaryland Congrats! My son just committed to South Carolina too.
