The University of Richmond in VA has a good international studies program and international business/ economics, also Spanish. It also offers a major and minor in Latin American, Latino, and Iberian Studies(LALIS).
UR has a beautiful campus, around 3k undergrads, 10 mins from downtown Richmond, lots to do in the area. UR also offers 45 ish full tuition/full ride scholarships each year to high stats students, along with some smaller merit scholarships. It also meets 100% of demonstrated need (it is a CSS profile school).
Richmond is about 2 hours south of DC, and there is an Amtrak stop a few miles from campus. I have 1 daughter who just graduated from UR and 1 who is a rising junior there. It is a phenomenal school.
In my experience here at CC I have found that many people’s agendas is to pay it forward. In my case, I came here to learn and in return I like to pass on what I learned to others. I see many, many people like that here who have been incredibly helpful with no agenda whatsoever, imo
Thank you, everyone! With my heart so set on Middlebury, I probably wouldn’t have opened my mind to schools like UR, UVA, UMich, Gtown (have considered, but I don’t think I have a chance at acceptance), and JHU. I visited Tufts last week, and honestly, I wasn’t impressed with the campus’ location. I didn’t love the outskirts of Boston. Tufts is an INCREDIBLE school, but I highly doubt I could get in and I don’t think the school is for me anyways. In my opinion, one of Midd’s most enticing elements is its rural and rustic milieu. While this may not be attractive for some, I love the idea of skiing at the SnowBowl during J-Term, hiking Snake Mountain, or merely admiring the fall foliage with friends. I am genuinely enamored by everything Midd has to offer. The personal connection I have to the school (I’ve been visiting my sister there frequently over the past two years) has solidified my decision of having Middlebury as #1 on my college list. With (hopefully) a breakout junior year for academics, maybe Midd could be a low reach for me. I certainly need to read into all of the schools that were recommended and construct a college list highlighting reaches/matches/safeties. Thanks again!
I think you have an excellent chance for admittance to Middlebury. Seconding a suggestion up-thread, based on your interests, I recommend you take a close look at Hamilton. You would be smart to consider St. Lawrence as well, as a safety.
In terms of a broader perspective, you should be aware that a common source of regret for college students is not having fully explored their options when they had the opportunity to so. So plan to explore yours to an appropriate extent. Even if this leads you back to your original interest in Middlebury, you will have benefitted from the experience. I would say, though, that you appear to have enough self-awareness to know that you prefer woodsy – ideally snowy – undergraduate-focused schools with excellent academics. You could probably safely limit your future research and visits to schools of this general type.
Absolutely. Yourself and so many other users on CC have really opened my eyes on this thread. I think I would really benefit from broadening my horizons and maybe exploring some alternate college options that I normally wouldn’t. Clearly I have quite a bit of work to do with my college list! I have spent the past year obsessing over Midd, I have only just begun to explore other college options in the last 2-3 months.
Be very careful with your obsession with Middlebury. I hope you get in and your stats are a great match for the school so if you don’t get accepted, it will be because thousands of white females from the northeast with similar stats will also apply and it becomes a crapshoot. You have many good schools on your list, try not to fall in love with any one in particular…it will lead to heartbreak if you are rejected. With that said, obviously you will get into a fantastic school that will meet your criteria but it might be a school other than Middlebury. Keep us posted !! Can’t hurt to have hundreds of CCers crossing their fingers for you !!
Everyone here on CC has really helped me expand my horizons, which is definitely (slightly) eroding my infatuation with Midd. Wherever I end up going, I think that I’m going to be really happy. With everyone’s additions, my college search has become a great deal easier. I’m so thankful for everyone on here! I will keep you all posted. Taking ACT and SAT in September/October, receiving rank in August, and receiving SAT II WH on the 21st. You all are so much more informative and supportive than my guidance counselor who didn’t know what Middlebury was and didn’t care to do any research on the school! Thank you all for everything, I appreciate it beyond words.
Since my credibility as a poster appears to have been called into question on this thread (“often the only way to do that is to choose another . . . school and make it look bad by comparison,” #7), perhaps in relation to Middlebury (?), it might be noted that I have a history of posting positive comments with respect to the school, making it surprising that bias was even suggested on this thread. This is one from 4/21/16:
“For the serious study of economics, Middlebury appears to be one of the strongest schools in the country”
(“University of Michigan vs. Middlebury College,” in the UM forum.)
@macd123 : Wishing you luck as you enter the second stage of your search. You certainly have several allies on CC.
If it helps, I see you and @urbanslaughter as the most helpful and credible CC posters when it comes to my threads (and other threads I’ve seen your posts on). I certainly do not question your credibility and I don’t believe that anyone should.
