Idioms/Past Participles - post them!

I'm just curious as to which idioms or past particles you guys have tested on CB tests, and the correct corresponding versions of them. I know silverturtle has a list of part particles but I haven't memorized all of them yet. Here are a few that I've seen, but I'm not 100 % sure on the correct versions so I'll need some help on identifying them... I got most of these right but picked intuitively/based off of ear.

IDIOMS (the errors)

1.) necessary (in) //// "necessary to"
2.) threat (of travelers) ////
3.) prefer the mall (more than) downtown stores ////
4.) Burns vehemently (protested over) her party's failure //// "protested"
5.) Far (away from) having been a diehard conservative, Hoover ////
6.) his statements were (inconsistent to) those //// "inconsistent with"
7.) Listening (at) the first song //// "listening to"
8.) A young Midwesterner recently (arrived to) ////
9.) capable (to distinguish) the shapes ////
10.) Opposite (to most people I know), Anna ////
11.) Not very particular (in) nesting sites, house wrens ////
12.) tendency (of changing) //// "tendency to"
13.) finally succeeded (with adapting) ////
14.) critic's mistrust (with) her findings ////
15.) in the hope (to gain funds) ////
16.) on the verge (to disappear) ////
17.) A powerful (advocate to) equal rights ////
18.) considered precocious (to her family) ////

PAST PARTICLES

1.) had (swam) //// had swum
2.) he (had wrote) //// had written
3.) even though he had (ran desperately) //// had run

Post correct versions of these as well as other idioms you've seen please!!!

There’s a list in silverturtle’s guide.

True but some of the ones I listed aren’t on his guide. Thanks to Fat_Nerd for posting the right versions of those errors. I corrected 18 as “considered by” when reading it… I might have to dug out the exact sentence again though.

I think Fat_Nerd answered most of them correctly. I will just add that:

“Prefer over” is considered incorrect in the SAT. I think I saw a question with “prefer -over” which was marked incorrect.

opposite to → opposite of (I prefer contrary to/unlike)

particular about

mistrust of

considered precocious “by” her family. (You need to provide the full sentence in order to know that the correct preposition is “by”. I remember this question.)

You should always look at a sentence as a whole when you try to figure out the correct preposition. Sometimes, the correct preposition(“idiom”) is different for a particular word depending on the situation.

Those are idiomatic phrases. Not idioms. Idioms are completely different than idiomatic phrases… Just sayin

@ Jeffrey: Thanks for the help - I’ll keep your advice in mind. Do you know of any good grammar sites? I remember there was one that you recommended/linked somewhere.

@ Josh: Good point. I can never keep grammar terms straight.
