IDOC Packet

This may be a dumb question but I'm figuring out to configure my IDOC packet to send. Based on the instructions it says to provide a "signed" copy of my parents 2012 tax return....Whose signature do I exactly put on the copy of the tax return and do I just put the signature on the top right corner on all the copies...cause that's what my friend told me to do......

What Documents Are Required?

One legible copy of each of the following documents is required:

A complete signed copy of your parents' 2012 federal income tax return (or a translated copy of their country's equivalent), including all required Schedules and all Partnership or Corporate returns, is required if your parents filed or will file a tax return for 2012. Do not send tax worksheets unless required for submission to the IRS. Do not send state tax returns or previous years' returns unless you are specifically instructed to. If your parents are not required to file a 2012 federal or equivalent income tax return, they must submit a Non-tax Filer's Statement and supporting documentation.

My mom signed on the document, like I believe there’s a place on the actual tax return for a signature. I may be wrong though, I haven’t been feeling well so I only really paid attention to the student page. You do need your parent’s SSN on each page.

Whoever completed the tax return (mom or dad) was required to sign it - there’s a signature line on the 1040 itself. That’s the only signature that’s needed.

What about if our parents filed the 1040A?

Here is a link to the IRS .pdf for the 1040A. Even if your parents got a copy from the library, or filed using Turbotax, or whatever, the form looks pretty much like this.

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040a.pdf</a>

At the bottom of the second page you can see that there is a section that says “Sign Here” for signatures. If your parents filed electronically, they still should be able to print out a paper copy of their return and sign it, then send it in your IDOC packet (that is what I am doing, although with the 1040).

If the program they used printed their name on that line, I would just scrunch up and sign right above it as well.

As stated above, the signature on the tax form belongs to whoever is filing the taxes (you if it is your return, your parents if it is theirs). There is a requirement to put the SSN of the “document owner” in the upper right corner of each document submitted. The instructions are unclear on whether it needs to be on every page… but to be safe, I put it on each page of each tax document. That is the SSN of the person the form belongs to (so you if it is your return, your parents if it is theirs).

Do not listen to “your friend” on what to do. Print out the instructions from College Board, and also look at the cover sheet and verify each item on it. If you aren’t sure, better to ask you here. Your friend who says to sign each page is not giving you good advice…

Actually, nvm. My parents had an accountant filed their taxes. It’s signed but not by signature… there’s a number that is used for their signatures. I guess that should be okay right?

Your parents should have received a printed copy of the return from the accountant after it was electronically filed. Make a copy of that copy, then have your parents physically sign it. The number on a printed copy isn’t a valid signature.

Oh… I already mailed it in. D:. Does this mean I have to remail it?

Wait… but the number on it is their social security number…

Before you send it in again, check with the college. No point in confusing them with duplicate tax forms if they don’t need them.

About the putting SSN on top of the document. If our parents filed joint returns, that means both my parent’s ssn number has to be written on each page?

The instructions are not clear (typical for IDOC!) … at least the number of the parent who signs first should be there.

Hello!
I’m having similar problems with all of this stupid IDOC Stuff. For me, though, it’s that my parents don’t have a SSN. Therefore, I am not sure what to put on the cover page and on each of their documents. I’ve been told ITN is no good, so should it be 0’s like in the FAFSA? Does anyone know?
