Ok, I'm probably over-analyzing this, but would appreciate any clarification - the IDOC Packet Completion Checklist says "Have you included a Social Security Number (if applicable) on each document submitted? Please print the Social Security Number of the document owner in the upper right corner of each document."

I had figured I'd put DD's SSN on everything, but the phrase "document owner" is confusing me - do I put my SSN on my 1040A, W2, etc. and her SSN on her Student Non-Tax Filer statement?

I couldn't find an answer on the IDOC FAQ, but want to mail this today instead of waiting until College Board opens on Monday. Thanks!

I am glad you posted this question. I didn’t even see that instruction, and I am getting ready to mail to IDOC this weekend as well. I will be interested in an answer too!

Really hope for an answer! bump!

I’m not an expert or anything, but my reading is that the student’s SSN would go on the student’s documents, and a parent’s on the parent documents. but for a joint tax return, I wonder if it matters whose SSN goes on it. Some of the documents are joint, and some (1099-misc for example) belong to only one of us. I think I am going to just put whoever’s name or SSN appears first on the document, unless someone I find something authoritative today.

Thanks, Mathmomvt
I figure that the reason they want the soc.sec. # is so that if docs get separated, they know which student they belong to. I am worried that if I put my or my H’s number at the top, that still won’t help get a lost page returned to my daughter’s file to send on to the correct schools? This should seem so simple to know what to do! At one of my daughter’s college visits, the FA people told the students to be sure to put their soc. at the top of all the IDOC docs, which she is just telling me now! I do wish someone from IDOC hung out on CC!

The cover sheet contains S’s, H’s and my SSN so I figure any of the 3 should get them back to the correct pile. It definitely says “document owner” and not “student” so I think using the parent number(s) on parent forms is ok.

Okay–what if there is information on student and parents on document and it’s not a tax form–ie: verification worksheet–do you put all 3 ss#'s on it? Plus on school specific forms–what do you put? My D has a Smith number already and their form asks for that. Do I also put the ss#?

It is RIDICULOUS that these details are not spelled out!

I would put your D’s SSN on all the forms that cover her and others, and I would put it on the school-specific forms as well.
