Before I order a new toner cartridge for my printer, I just want to confirm . . . for each school that requires IDOC, I will have to send a separate envelope with a separate copy of my tax return?

So, for example, 10 schools = 10 separate envelopes (all containing the same info)?

No, you send one copy of all your documents to IDOC and the schools get the information from IDOC. IDOC distributes the information to schools, much like Profile and FAFSA.

Follow that coversheet from DOC exactly and send it to them, they take care of the rest.

Of course, not every school uses IDOC… last year about half of D2’s did, and the rest had some other mechanism (mail directly, or one wanted a fax – which was crazy, as we also had corporate returns, it was a long fax - - too big for our online fax service to handle). What a headache. The good news is that you only have to do this once, after that it is following only one school’s requirements.

Also… when your kid gets to sophomore year, check on what is needed before assuming. For example, turns out non-custodial parents at D2’s school don’t have to use IDOC after freshman year (I am still stuck with it, but her dad can just send his return directly to the school).

Ohhhh . . . I thought each school had a separate cover sheet, separate envelope, separate copy of tax return. So I was mistaken?

Then I can order the regular toner cartridge instead of the high yield . . . ;)

Yes, the regular size cartridge will work! Maybe someday they’ll take files of scans, wouldn’t that be nice!

One of my pet peeves – last year I thought "I"DOC implied something electronic. Guess I am brainwashed by iPhones and iPads… hah. Silly me. Manual, picky, annoying process… it would be GREAT if we could upload scanned versions instead. Maybe for some future generation of parents and students…
