We are living overseas and have to file a very complicated tax return. I was able to use the return to fill out the FAFSA and CSS Profile on time but the return wasn't filed until yesterday. I tried to use the IRS retrieval tool but it's too early.
Am I supposed to get a request to file the IDOC thing, or was I supposed to do it automatically? I got all the aps in just under the wire and may have not read everything fully.

Depends on what schools you applied to.

What I mean is, will the school that wants it ask for it, or was I supposed to know to do it automatically.

Helpfulmommy - If I were you, I wouldn’t take any chances with it. Call each financial aid office your son or daughter is applying to and ask. You can check online too, but if the information isn’t clear, go ahead and call. For what it’s worth, my older son (applying for fall 2010) never got any requests for IDOC, and my middle son (applying now) had a request from one school - it came in an email. Nobody here can know what each school you’re looking at requires or how they notify you. Just call and then you’ll feel confident you got the right answer! Good luck!

Helpfulmommy can probably e-mail, also, since they are living overseas…bottom line is the college website should tell you what forms are needed to be filled out and probably will tell you if they need copies of tax forms right away with the finaid applications and where to send those (either directly to the college or through the IDOC service). Some colleges won’t require the actual tax forms but may send you an e-mail later asking you to send them for verification. Just do what the college websites tell you to do (read each college website).
