IE between GT/UMich

Where should I go

I's really close to their deadline
but I'm still unable to decide.

IMO,
GT is academically better
however
UMich is safer place to live

(I'm an international girl)

I'm interested in OR and logistic

please help me!!!

GT seems fine on campus. Off… well that’s a different story. They guarantee on-campus housing to anyone who puts in a deposit before June 1 too, so it’s not like there’s no chance of being able to reside there.

Problem is… you don’t want to live 4 years of your life ON campus all the time. :).

I would say safety comes first before anything.. haha.. UMich won’t be that far behind GT academically anyway.. my 2 cents

I’ll do master
so, it will take approx. 1.5 yrs

I never visit both Atlanta and Ann Arbor.
Therefore, I don’t know what do they actually be.
That’s my problem.

I’ve been to Ann Arbor quite a few times and a number of my friends go there (UM) as well. It is very much a college town. You can walk almost anywhere (if you live out of town it isn’t too hard to find parking). It is a pretty diverse town (for the Midwest) and has a fairly high Asian population (and that’s not just from the college students). It’s fairly diverse given its size, and there are plenty of things to do on the weekend. It has a mild bohemian vibe if anything. Atlanta is less of a college town, but still very diverse. It will certainly have more to do, but that somewhat depends on what you enjoy doing on the weekends (it has a much stronger music scene than Ann Arbor). It’s much less of a college town, however.

I’ve heard that GLC (on-campus housing at GT) is not a nice place to live, isn’t it? but Northwood (on-campus housing at UM) is quite well, right?

However, I think I can live off-campus housing at UM because it’s also safe.

Any comment on off-campus housing at GT?
My friend told me Atlanta is VERY dangerous.

My prof suggest that I should go to GT because of its reputation.
However, the living condition is my concern.

GT and UM’s reputations are that much different?

UM is safe everywhere, and it’s a decent sized town (around 100,000 people, which will be considerably smaller than Atlanta).

I’m a Gatech undergrad right now. The GLC is just off campus (right across the street). The apartments are fairly nice actually. But it’s quite far from the IE building (though, the Stinger, the GT bus system, runs everywhere on campus, so this should not be a problem). The GLC is in an okay location. The immediate area surround the GLC is an area called Homepark, which is where most of the tech students that live off campus stay. The area looks run down, but it’s fairly safe, and is mostly college students. in terms of safety, unless you’re walking alone late at night, it’s pretty safe. The GT police do regular patrols around campus. I wouldn’t take safety into concern whether choosing between GT and UM. It’s really not a big deal at all. The bad parts of Atlanta are elsewhere. GT is in the middle of midtown, which for the most part is safe. The worst parts of town are north, and south of the city.

I’d make my decision based on the strength of the program, the professors you’d be likely to work under, and funding. In terms of IE, IE is the best engineering program at Tech, and has been ranked #1 for undergrand and grad in the nation for the past 10-15 years. It’s really a great program at Tech. I’m not familiar with UM’s IE, so you may have to ask someone else for input there, but as far as I know, IE is a very very strong program at Tech.

in summary, you shouldn’t make your decision based on safety. While I’d imagine UM is probably a little safer, GT isn’t at all dangerous by any stretch of the word. I hope this helps.

Also, if you’re looking to stay off campus, and have a car, there are a number of great places to stay. Atlantic Station, and places around Defoors are very nice. Atlantic station is pricey, but it’s an entire community. There’s grocery, shopping, restaurants, and things to do.

Homepark is where a lot of students stay off campus, but the houses are not very nice. Fairly old, but fairly cheap. It’s a relatively safe area, as it’s mostly GT students. Anyway, if you would like anymore info, send me a personal message

Thank you for all comments above.

I actually do not have a car and do not plan to have one.

Do you recommend a good 1br in a safe place and walking distance to campus?

If you’re looking for a walking distance place to campus, it’s pretty much Homepark, which is where the GLC is. And in all honesty, I would not live there. It’s safe, but the houses are fairly old. Homepark, which is mostly all GT students, is mostly guys as well, as most girls simply don’t like living in the older dingier housing. To the south, there’s centennial place apartments, but that’s traditionally non Tech student housing. I think your best bet would be to live in GLC given that you’re a female, and don’t have a car. They’re fairly nice, and walking distance to campus.

Do you receive equal funding at both?

No funding from both of them.

However, I can manage financial thing from my country’s source.

Let says expenses would not a problem at all.

Is reputation bet GT and UM for IE program much different??
