I'm a freshman majoring in Industrial & Systems engineering and after a some research I see that there is more to being an Industrial Engineer than I thought there was.

I originally thought that Industrial engineering was only "engineering" in the sense that you are constantly dealing with the technical side of systems and efficiency. Now I see that there is also a "managerial" aspect of IE that has to do with keeping the cost of a company down.

I want to become a consultant and helping companies create efficient systems and products I don't want to work for a company and help them keep there cost down.

Part of the reason I feel this way is the fact that I feel like with consulting I'll get more diversity in the problems I have to tackle and have more opportunities to exercise my creativity and my problem solving skills plus I feel like I'd be more valuable as a consultant. Plus I want to spend more time creating systems then maintaining them.

What should I do specifically throughout my college career to end up as a consultant rather than a manager?

I would really like to work with companies like IBM but i hear you need to be IVY to work there. My school is ranked #10 in IE but is definitely not IVY league.
