<p>If a college says that they "prefer" a recommendation from an English teacher, does that mean that if we use ANOTHER teacher we're in a disadvantage (even if that other teacher writes a better recommendation)?</p>

<p>^ Agreed. Call and ask. It probably means that they really want you to use an English teacher, and if it’s not amazing it might hurt. Would they take an extra letter, so you can do both?</p>
<p>^They take 2 extra letters of recommendation. But I’m just worried that they might give more importance to non-supplementary recommendations :(</p>
