If a person is struggling in a course that is toward my CS/Engineering major...

is it because that person genuinely interested in his/her major or because of that person’s learning style that doesn’t click with online classes or certain teaching style of professors or many other factors?

I ask because some people make the assumptions that when you’re struggling with a class, it automatically means you’re not enjoying it. I’m currently taking CSC/EEE120 online this summer semester, which is a Digital Design Fundamentals course. This is barely my 2nd week into the class and I find the class interesting because I get to actually test hardware and stuffs using many hardware tools and so far, I did good on my first quiz (which luckily was an open-note quiz) for the class but I’m currently struggling really bad on how to actually do my hardware lab because the online instructions on how to actually know how to use analog discovery, breadboards, and building circuits on a breadboard are very vague and confusing for me to the point where my mind won’t stop running in circles and my hardware lab assignment becomes too late for me to submit online and gets marked missing. I learn things much better when it’s hands-on with someone in-person.

On top of that, I have to spend extra money to get myself a webcam and microphone for my personal computer so my professor can observe me taking the quizzes/tests at my own house, which feels awkward for me and I prefer to just take tests/quizzes in a classroom(rather than being watched in my own home) if students in the online class are required supervision.

I like what the class teaches and I’m pretty sure my professor is a good teacher (most likely teaches much better in-person) but I just can’t learn this way, which is frustrating because this is one of my last two courses I need before I can possibly finish my Associate’s Degree this Summer, to transfer to University and I might have no choice but to drop this class and possibly postpone my graduation and University transfer to Fall 2018 semester because I don’t feel confidant that I’ll do well in the course, especially in this semester because Summer semesters are SUPER fast-paced and I’m a slow-learner while my 2nd course I’m taking this semester is an even more rigorous and difficult one(University Physics/PHY121). I’ve been in my Community College for 4 years(due to personal problems, financial problems, and unemployment causing me to be a lot of credit card debt) and I feel like that is very long time for CC for someone my age(22 years old).

Edit: isn’t interested in his/her major

It sounds like you are interested, it sounds like you want to do well. It also sounds like taking this type of course through an online format doesn’t work for you, especially with the pace of the shorter term. Do you have an alternative?

@NorthernMom61: Alternative what? You mean Alternative plan?

I think she means alternative way of taking this course, such as in person and not online.

Have you tried communicating with the teacher about your issues. Perhaps he will have some suggestions.

Exactly seems like a regular classroom setting would work better for you for this type of course.

Whenever you are struggling in a course, it’s really important to talk to your instructor about it, ASAP. I think you should talk to each of your professors, and to your program advisor as well.

Are you already accepted at the University? Are you planning to take a full load of classes next semester?
