If a school's too expensive, should I just not apply?

I'd love to go to NYU, but the idea of living in debt for life is too scary.

If you can’t afford it don’t bother. It would be one thing to take a flyer on a school that might offer great FA or merit aid, but NYU is not it.

If you really want to go to NYU and want to spend a little money to find out if you would have gotten in, I say apply. Of course you might be denied. On the other hand you could be accepted…then you’d have to make the financial decision.

You just need to decide if you would always wonder or if it just doesn’t matter.

have you thought about possibly getting your AA degree first? or transferring there senior year? you could also consider getting your masters there or just taking summer semester there.

I say don’t. It’s just like those wedding dress shows: the girls have a low budget but decide they want to try on the expensive dress “just to see.” Of course, they love it, but they can’t pay for it, so they walk out of the store disappointed…or they buy it and bury themselves in debt…but they don’t air that part of the show.

Anyway, I say only apply to schools that you know you would go to if you got in. NYU would be awesome, but totally unrealistic. What happens if you do get in? Do you take the leap risk graduating with a crushing amount of debt? Or do you go to another school and say, “Well I COULD have gone to NYU…” You don’t really win here. Put your energy into applying and forming a plan for a college that you can afford.

I love your analogy JulieJuu and agree with your post. Senior year is busy, spend your time and application money on better bets. Maybe work on some scholarship applications.

you can consult your nearest educational counselor and ask for him…just try to check your eligibility of scholarships…and you can take some part time works to meet your preliminary expenses… :)

If your STATS are very good, you may get substantial FA. But it is rare. The ONLY way to know is to apply. However, you have to apply to a mix of schools that are safeties as well. You have to be smart and informed that NYU may very well dissapoint you, but right here on cc, I have been suprised as well, with some good FA packages offered.

What college would you be applying to and what are your test scores and GPA?

Some colleges at NYU have little/no merit to give.
