If Admissions changes your program/college-is that a bad sign?

When he checked his application status today, my son's program and college were somehow changed from his initial application. Since he didn't specify a second or third choice, I find this strange.

My guess is that he won't be accepted into his desired program, or even any program in Engineering, but he may be accepted into this "new" program/college. Is this a way of shuffling applicants around to less popular programs?

Your son wasn’t admitted to his requested program. The “Check Application Status” is set to remove the decision line in preparation for a Feb 19th official decision date, but for those admitted to alternate programs, you can glimpse what that program is by noticing that the initially requested program has been changed. The good news is that he hasn’t been denied admission, but hasn’t been admitted to his requested program either. When that happens, they can admit to General Engineering, or Division of General Studies (DGS), which exists to help students transfer into another college and program, possibly even Engineering, after he’s proved he can get the grades needed (he’ll be able to register for the same first-year classes as engineers). Aside from DGS, I’m not sure whether they would place you into another program entirely, unless it was somehow related to your son’s initial choice.

So… if there is DGS in the program line, that means you’re in?

That is a false statement. General Engineering is a full-fledged major of its own at UIUC, and is not just another name for “Undecided Engineering” like a lot of people assume.

That’s true bonehead, but they do offer General Engineering to some engineering applicants who don’t get into their requested program of choice. I never said it meant undecided. DGS, in contrast, exists to help you transfer into another full-fledged program. At least that’s what I was trying to say. Sorry for the confusion.

I applied for Biology and all of my information changed to Division of General Studies today with an Undeclared major. Not quite sure if that means I’m in or not.

Mine got changed also, I got accepted to Consumer Economics and Finance Concentration I guess.

Swimmer, I can’t say for sure, but if I were a betting man, I’d say you’re in with DGS.

Thats my bet too. If thats the case, that works out better than my applied major because I changed my mind on my major already!

same happened to me, switched from engineering to general. its weird though cus the math part of my app is the best part, although they do seem strict about the overall scores for the engineer school. guess we will have to wait and see. good luck to everyone = P

So I checked whether mine was changed or not and it was the same. And Im pretty sure that its impossible for me to get accepted to business school. Im guessin that means im rejected huh?

To know for sure you need to wait until the 19th. They will be updating decisions up until then, and will only display the decision line on the 19th. You may not have been gotten to yet. So, the answer is no, nothing changing, just means nothings changed.

But if you think about it, why would they even bother to change your program of studies if you are not in, right?

My thoughts exactly
