would you think maybe the student has a pretty good shot at an award from the school? My D is sifting through invites and one of her favorites is providing airfare. What experiences has anyone had? Do some schools issue blanket airfare for these weekends or only for certain awards?

Sounds good to me. My kids were never offered travel expenses. Must be a reason.

My DS received paid airfare for his visit to his college which he now attends. He also received 3 scholarships which amounted to a full ride. I wouldn’t assume your child is getting a big merit award however I would assume that it is a positive sign. Think of the paid airfare as a windfall for visiting a college. Good luck.

Not always. UNC, for example, always awards some sort of scholarship (it may be as little as $2500) if invited to scholarship weekend (not sure if airfare is provided). But, the all expenses paid trip to Morehead-Cain finals weekend is not a sure thing at all (less than 50/50 chance of a scholarship).

My d is receiving half airfare to two schools that have admitted her and not for scholarship weekend. One school gave her about half tuition merit and the other was about 85%. Since these schools are in adjoining states, we are going to see if each will pay half of her ticket and she get it for free. Of course, she will need me to come since she isn’t old enough to rent a car.

My son got several offers of airfare. Took two of them. Got admitted to both schools. Each airfare was for a specific weekend or time frame.

My son was offered one of these, and it had nothing to do with competing for a scholarship. He was offered a nice merit scholarship, but did not compete for it. They just want all students to be able to see the campus before deciding, so if an accepted student lives far from the school this is offered to them. This school was at least a 12 hour drive from our home.

Thanks all-she is already admitted-this is specifically for sch. weekend. Militarymom-I know what you’re saying about needing to come;I have to work some weekends so that;s why we’re having to make arrangements ahead for these visits.
