...is there any hope? Will any classes be added or changed to a waitlist? I don't know what to do if I can't get into Spanish 2010...I will probably forget everything by second semester. Has this happened to anyone/what did you do?

they slowly open listings over the orientation sessions (so “closed” really means “closed for this orientation session, more spots will be opened in a few days”), and the first week of classes has a lot of add/drop (it’s called “class shopping”). but spanish is notoriously hard to get in to. just keep trying. you have 6 semesters to fulfill your foreign language requirement. you won’t forget it all.

thanks. I’ll get in somehow…it will be nice when this is all over.

Just got out of the first orientation session. They do appointments from 9am - 4pm, and if you have yours later than about 11:00, I’d expect Spanish to be shot, maybe Econ, and a solid amount of various poly sci classes. Also pretty much any intro-level class that fulfills the Non-Western requirement. It’s pretty rough, but I ended up with 15 credits worth of classes that I know I will enjoy. Good luck!

Don’t worry about the schedule you get at orientation… Most people I know drastically changed it by the end of the first week of classes.

I fulfilled non-western my 1st semester 3rd year, with 2 of my friends my same year. There’s no rush on that one.

anybody know how hard is it to get intermediate microecon(econ3010)…and at orientation do they assign appointment times for registration or is it first come first served?

I had an end-of July Orientation session and I was able to get into Intermediate Micro. It was part of their periodic opening up of seats for each orientation session.

Registration times are assigned, and like someone else said, a time before noon is usually your best bet to get into classes.

How did you find Econ 3010 compared to AP Econs…and taking it in the first semester is it difficult or manage-able (that is along with 12 credits of other engineering courses)?

Well, I didn’t take AP Econ. I was a second year transfer and I had taken Intro to Micro and Macro at my first school. I can say that Econ at UVA was much more difficult than my original school, and I was in a much larger class compared to what I was used to. I also had a professor that was very hard to understand. I was taking it at the same time as STAT 212 and two other reading intensive courses. It’s not impossible to do, but you’d have to ask someone with experience in the e-school about how it balances with taking 12 credits in that school. I know that, in general, the e-school classes are difficult.

Also, I should clarify that I felt it was more difficult because I felt like my prior Econ courses did not prepare me for Econ 301 at UVA. There were concepts/theories that had not been discussed in my intro classes so 301 required a lot of self-teaching and “catching up”. I don’t know if you have access to Toolkit or Collab (whichever they’re using officially) try and see if any of the 3010 sections have a syllabus posted and see if you are familiar with what will be covered.
