Sue B., Hoeing, Gilbert are all freshman.

Can someone please address the social life? I keep hearing that there really isn't much to do and people are generally apathetic AND the weather does not help with the mood. I find people saying "It will give you a great education, but don't expect that much else." On the other hand, students also say that you must take initiative.

Who will teach me? grads or prof.?

How big are the freshman classes?

What happens on a typical weekend?

What issues do students talk about?

What are the college's biggest drawback?

What languages does the school offer?

Thanks Alot Insane!!!

Sorry, left out one more question.

Do you know approx. how long it will take to travel from U of rochester to NYC via train, bus, and airplane?

Thanks Insane!!!

@jazz
Its really not that bad. Usually there is something going on in the weekend. The school sends a email called Weekend Highlights towards the end of the week to highligh whats going on campus. But whoever said you have to take the iniative is right. Rochester is really self enclosed, so it tends to get boring on the weekends. But there are continually looping busses that run all over Rochester. So its up to you to find out what going on nearby, like a concert at Eastman, or a play elsewhere and figure out how to get there. But its not to bad, if you don't have car there is always the bus. There also is the zip car system which lets you rent cars real cheap for the weekend. As for students being apathetic, I don't think that true. Everyone I've met so far enjoys being in Rochester. There's always a few bad apples, but they'll be everywhere you go. Weather could be better, but its Rochester, its expected. Its actually snowing now. So not much you can really do about that, suck it up and get used to it.

"Who will teach me? grads or prof.?"
Most classes if not all classes are taught by professors. TAs are usually undergrad students who lead workshops, recitations, and labs. Grad TAs tend to do the grading when its comes to tests and quizzes. Most professors like grading the papers the assign.

How big are the freshman classes?
Truly depends on the class and major. Most intro classes for majors tend to have anywhere from 40 - 100 kids. Quest classes are special research intensive classes mainly for freshman that cap around 10 - 15 students. CAS classes, the primary writing class, are also real small around 15 - 20 kids.

Jazz...
Some people are apathetic, others are way not apathetic, but a student affairs professional here has said that the environment is pretty apathetic... He said that during the 2004 Presidential Election there really wasn't anything.
But then you also have nutso groups like Students for Social Justice and the Fair Trade wackos, but those people are few and far between. There isn't much balance on the other side and when the SSJ and those organizations do things, they are usually small and make fools of themselves. Students do have their political opinions, they are just usually not expressive (except for those small groups)

I appreciate the responses. It's just that I will most likely end up attending so I want to know a little before I step on campus. Right now, my only real concern is the food, but I guess you make due with what you have.

Next Question:

Taking into account all of UR and Rochester itself, do you think a car would be unnecessary? I will most likely not end up paying much for college so a car would not be out of the question. How often do car owners use their cars? Weekly? On the weekends? etc. I know there are buses and all, but even for out of city trips. I've heard parking is not generally available and very far from being convenient so I have to take that into account...

You will be wasting money by having a car and freshmen are not allowed to have cars anyways. Also, you can pretty much get around with the bus system- the stops on it have all you need.
Also when you turn 19, you can get zipcars which make it even more convenient- $7/hr to rent a car!

Thanks a lot for the previous valuable informations.

Do you know the traveling price from NYC to UR via bus train and airplane?

Do we get to choose who we dorm with?

Again thanks for your time!

the only problem im having is airline prices from miami =/
anyone have any suggestions where i can find good deals??

My d's learning style is interactive. She prefers discussion or Q& A format to lectures. Is this available for a humanities type kid at U of R?

Is the emphasis for faculty on undergraduate teaching, or is it on research/graduate teaching?

Thanks.

The cost really depends on when you get the tickets...
You can do JetBlue to Kennedy and fly for less than $200 is done well enough in advance... You could also spend $600+ in getting tickets

I believe you can choose who you want to room with, but ResLife HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY discourages it. There have been wayyyy too many roommate problems this way. Also, many times these former friends have become enemies of each other.

For airlines, get the tickets straight from the websites!

Some classes are lecture based, but even with those there are recitations which is small group learning. Still many many classes are small and discussion based.
I would say that a majority of the faculty here is very enthusiastic about undergraduate teaching especially in the humanities.

Thanks, hopkinslax. One other question. My d is a dancer. How much dance is actually offered at Rochester? I've seen the catalogue, but it's not clear. How active are the dance clubs on campus, and are they any good? Anything else you can tell me about dance (primarily jazz and ballet)?

Thanks.

I have a few unrelated questions:
Are there any kitchens where students can cook their own food?
What is the bathroom situation? I'm assuming the whole floor shares?
If you're on the premed track, how easy is it to get a research position with a prof? Is it possible for undergrads to get some experience in Rochester's medschool?
Is crime really an issue on campus or is it just one of those "just be aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine" sort of things?
Is it possible to have your merit aid package increase for your soph, junior, and/or senior years (compared to frosh)?
Thanks!

Don't know much about dancing other than I know many people take dance classes and enjoy them.

Yes there are kitchens on each floor
There are usually around 3-4 bathrooms per floor
If you are determined, then you can definitely get a lab position... I am actually hunting right now
Crime is not prevalent at all- just don't be stupid and you'll be fine
Yes it is- I randomly got some Academic Competitiveness thing about midway through this semester.

chedva-
i'm a very intense dancer too (mostly jazz, modern, ballet, and tap), and i'll be a freshman at UR in the fall. the actual dance department at UR is not that great. but there are two very popular dance groups on campus, BPG (ballet performance group) and D'Motions. D'Motions is primarily a hip hop dance troupe. BPG is a ballet group. You can choose your level of involvement, but everyone must be in at least one ballet piece per show. They also have many jazz and modern pieces as well. It seems like a really nice group of girls, and they even have their own social events as well (they had a BPG Semi Formal this fall!). I'm really excited to get involved with BPG when i get on campus in the fall!! :)

Is it possible to study something that is not already offered - let's say I want to learn a language the university doesn't offer? Is it possible to do independent study?

UR does have independent study options but to find a professor that can teach you a random language would be the difficult task.
