If choosing Common Apps "Your Own Topic", should I state it?

<p>I'm doing the essay on a topic of my own, should I state the topic before the actual essay? Or just leave that to the reader?</p>

<p>Edit: my topic is more about myself, and my experiences, passions, about volunteering, and about my grandmother. So the topic is pretty obvious... but does not exactly fit into one of the common app's choices.</p>
