If I applied to Northeastern...

...would I get into their Honors or Scholars programs?

I recently visited Northeastern (one of my safety schools) and saw in their presentation that my UW GPA and SAT scores are higher than those of the top 50% of applicants. After learning about the Honors and Scholars programs, I realized I could have a shot at them, which could be cool (if I somehow end up attending my safety school).

Just out of curiosity, what are my chances of making it into those programs (no matter how pretentious or worthless or whatever these programs may be for some people--I'm simply wondering)?

GPA: 3.97 UW (no weighted)
SAT: 2360 (800 M, 760 CR, 800 W, 11 essay)

A school’s honors program usually gives the students preferred scheduling and other perks such as meetings and seminars. Def go for it. I have a coworker whose daughter is at her college’s honors pgm. She’s invited to top level mtgs and many academic dept chairs know her. her networking opps have been phenomenal and paid many dividends

Northeastern was also my safety, so I say you have a very good shot. I had slightly lower stats (3.95 UW and 2300 SAT) and got into the Scholar’s Program (which also put me into the Honors Program).

Your stats look pretty high so my guess is that your odds would be good. If possible, check their Common Data Set, section C, and you should be able to tell if you are likely to be in the top 10% of admitted students. I would not blow this off as pretentious or worthless without learning more about it. Sometimes the perks are very worthwhile.

Northeastern is going to be my safety as well. I think you should definitely make it to the Honors college, but I can’t speak much for the Scholars program. I don’t see why you wouldn’t be a good candidate, though.

My stats are a bit lower (3.89 UW and 1540/2280 SAT), so I’m probably not going to be able to get the Scholars award. However, since I’m going to be a National Merit Semifinalist (and hopefully Finalist), I should get a full scholarship, right? Is the University Scholars program even more money on top of the NM award? Do you think it would be possible to get the Scholars Award EA with my stats, or should I wait until RD when I will have retaken the SAT, and will have a better GPA (got 4 B’s Freshman year, which is what is dragging the GPA down)? I would love to go to school on the East Coast, near my brother, and Northeastern seems like the most affordable option, so getting into a special program there would be awesome.

I think you will most likely get into those programs and get some pretty large scholarships.

Apply EA before that money is all taken. It’s trivial if you are applying early to any other school using the common app. There is no additional essay in the supplement

@ClassicRockerDad - ok, I’ll go ahead and send it out Early. I would hate to miss getting the full scholarship because I didn’t raise my scores and grades a bit, however I’ve been doing some research and it looks like stats aren’t that important for the scholarship (apparently it has a large emphasis on entrepreneurship and people with 2350+ have been passed up for kids with great ECs and a 2100).
