I'm still not sure whether I want to major in engineering or in biology at UCLA. If I apply to the school of engineering I know it will be much more difficult to get in. If I apply to L&S and later change my mind, will it be very difficult to switch? Is it really much easier to get into L&S than into the school of engineering?

My son applied to L&S as an undecided major. He took the basic science/engineering prerequisites in chemistry, calculus, and physics while he made up his mind what he wanted to major in. He knew that transferring to engineering took a minimum gpa, so he studied his ass off to keep his grades up. Towards the end of his freshman year, his gpa was pretty good, so he took the plunge to apply for engineering. He had to submit a form available from the engineering dept secretary, and also write an essay on “Why I want to be an engineer”. He was admitted within a couple of weeks and started in on the engineering curriculum the next fall. If he had applied to engineering from the beginning, I don’t think it would have changed the classes he took his first year, but he did study harder than otherwise because he didn’t want to mess up his transfer.

I don’t think it’s much easier, but it is probably a bit easier.

As for transferring from L&S to HSSEAS, it’s only impossible if you aren’t capable of getting a ~3.5 GPA your first year, in which case you might decide that engineering isn’t for you anyway. If you want to keep your options open you will probably have a slightly different schedule than you might if you went straight for biology or straight for X engineering, but it probably wouldn’t be a big deal.

So if you think might want to major in biology, I think it would be better to start out in L&S.
