Student in the very competitive Fairfax County VA
4.0 GPA weighted in a school that doesn't do unweighted (1.0 boost for AP, 0.5 boost for Honors) and doesn't class rank, 500 kids in the class, don't know how much this matters but-- high school is #90 in the country, #3 in the state
Good ECs with leadership, work, and volunteer experience
Boys State VA participant
White
31 ACT
4 APs this year, 1 sophomore, 3 junior (8 total APs) and honors classes etc.
Nothing lower than a B
National Honor, DECA, the usual
Good essays (haha)
Be brutally honest please, thanks in advance!!

Scores thus far…AP World-4, AP Psych-5, AP US-4, AP Lang/Comp-4
Also, I have a very, very well-written recommendation by my tennis coach, in addition to teacher/counselor recs, whom I’ve known forever and knows me well as I’ve been captain Jr/Sr year

If you go to Thomas Jefferson High School then you will get into all of those schools probably with significant scholarships. If you go to any other school in the county University of Michigan and University of Texas-Austin may present a problem but with your scores and gpa you will more then likely be accepted with a deferral being the worst case scenario and I repeat worst. Show some leadership positions and take a few subject specific SAT subject tests and I think you will be fine. Good luck and I hope you get into all of those schools.

I think you have a good shot at IUB! It may be a little less of a chance if you want the Kelley School of Business. However, since I am from Indiana, take it with a grain of salt (I’ve only heard of one person getting rejected from my school). IU has rolling admissions, so if you’re done with the application, send it in ASAP!

^^ He doesn’t go to TJHSST, they are certainly higher than #3 in the state/#90 in the country. More like perennial top 5 in the country. He’s probably in Vienna or Langley or McLean. UVA admissions have very good longstanding relationships with the GCs at their big feeder schools in NoVa, that is a better asset than any supposed ranking of his school. The GC recommendation will count for a lot in that application.

4.0 weighted is not much information, but 8 APs + Honors suggests good course rigor with a B+ average. That GPA is barely competitive, not super strong for UVA, but the AP and Honors courses may mitigate the grades somewhat.

4.0 weighted/31 ACT/IS suggests he is borderline for admission at UVA.

What is your intended major?
Also, you can easily calculate the uwGPA yourself. UMich would be a reach to low reach depending on your uwGPA and intended major. It is more likely a reach as your uwGPA is likely below 3.75 as your school has a 5.0 max scale in wGPA.

@FCCDAD yes, spot on. James Madison HS in Vienna B+/A- average in AP and Honors courses and all A’s in regular courses. Yearly, I take about 4-5 honors/AP and 3 regular courses. Thanks a lot

@billcsho intended major is most likely business, but I would also be happy to major in econ, government, psychology… I probably want to attend law school in the future. Also, I have about a 3.65 UW. Thanks a lot

Further update… $20k a year merit from Tulane and $10k dean’s scholar with honor college for Indiana… based on these is it likely that I have a chance at Michigan LSA?
