If I don't end up liking UCLA???

Well, i think im going to send in my SIR to LA, but i am still really unsure. it seems like a safe bet even if my heart wants to go to UCSD. However, if i really really hated LA and it seems to be unbearable next year, is it possible to transfer to UCSD after the first year? Or how long does it take before i can apply? and how hard is it to transfer from one UC to another??

It's hard to transfer from UC to UC since community college students are given priority and the majority of the transfer spots. It's better to be sure about where you want to go from the start and go there than risking the chance of not being able to transfer and being stuck at a university you never wanted to go to from the beginning (higly likely that you will fail at your transfer attempt later on). If your heart is set on UCSD, then why are you sending you SIR to LA?

my dad wants me to go to a more prestigious college. although i feel they are quite the same, while ucla has more popularity because of sports and such, i think academic wise they're pretty much at par with each other. I think im sending my SIR to LA just because i want to experience what i may have turned down? and SD...i am sooo familiar with it cause i've been going to school all my life in the area..and i hate changes. i feel way more secure with ucsd. ahh im so confused. im supposed to be sending my SIR by tonight. How much more competitive is ucla than ucsd???

had the same issue with you a few weeks ago. Although i think my decision isnt too hard to make. In terms of academics, UCSD would have been better for me. However, i only got in as bioE premed and id ont wanna go to med school so im picking UCLA's bioE even though its worse. But all in all, i like the area and the sports and spirit and everything. I mean, not to bag on sd or anything but.. they dont even got football.

If the only reason why you're considering UCLA is because of your dad (which it sounds like), send in your SIR to UCSD. You are betting on the wrong horse if you expect that you'd be able to transfer out if you don't like LA in 1-2 years. You're going to college and it's your life, not your dad. Send in your SIR to SD and spend the next few days explaining to your dad why you're more comfortable attending SD. If he disagrees, you only have a few more months left of facing him before you're off in college (and those few months will outweigh 4 years at a place you were never interested in to begin with).

yeah dehtran. Same with me. I'm gonna do bioE at ucla as well. And yeah i love the campus. I checked it out the past weekend and it is so nice. The surrounding area is man.. Im excited. Thats all i can say. Ronar i think you should follow your heart. Dont worry about academics and whatnot. i mean come on. bioE is ranked 42 and that didnt stop me. In the end we're all gonna succeed. I mean.. we did get into these good schools didnt we so whats stopping us from succeeding in the future. In the end then, its not about the academics(at least it isnt for us) just worry about the college life. Where do you see yourself enjoying more. And for me, that answer is simple. UCLA all the way.

ucla rules and is far superior in academics than ucsd. trust me, a degree from la will be better than one from where again?

Is it really that hard to transfer from UC to UC?

i'm with jyancy. ROMIC, whatever you do, don't let your dad decide where you go. if you want to SIR to san diego, then just say "damn it all" and do it. LA and SD's reputations are rapidly becoming comparable...you will do quite well for yourself in life with a degree from UCSD. seriously.

I agree with those that have posted to do what YOU want to do. Don't let your dad make your decision for you! If you aren't happy you won't do well. Good luck!

Yes. First off, you can only enroll at a UC as a frosh or junior. Second, they give the criteria for junior admission selection right on the admission web page and they clearly state 1st priority is reserved for CC students under the state higher-ed master plan.

To the OP, I'd say go with ucsd although I'll also add this advice. You say you hate changes, but change is inevitable in life. Your friends from HS are going away, like it or not. In a few years you'll have to be supporting yourself. You can stay in the same city, but Heraclitus nailed it over 2000 years ago when he said "You can't step into the same river twice". So ask yourself why it is you dislike change, and what you can do to change that (no pun intended). At college wherever you go, there are opportunities to try new things with little penalty for messing up, and counselling available to help learn new skills and unlearn old habits. 18 is a terrible age to be mired in your habits like you're already old before your time!!

If your in worried about prestige...not much diff... If your in engineering, UCSD's engineering is better. UCSD is better in science overall too. Go to UCSD and ask them about UCLA's bioengineering program. They will laugh at you.

This really isn't true. UCSD has at least as many top 10 departments as UCLA, more Nobelists, more Academy members, and has a reputation for being a research giant.

UCSD's bioengineering is definitely ranked higher than UCLA's, but would you agree that UCLA has a better/stronger electrical engineering program?

i agree that ucla does have a stronger electrical engineering program. my cousin was an EE graduate and is now attending usc for grad school. its tough.. she had a 3.6 gpa though. still. would graduate schools look at science majors from LA better than science majors from SD? i really plan on going to dental school after i graduate..

EE program is better at UCLA 13th UCSD 16th...but yea go where YOU want

ROMIC -

I have one daughter going to UCSD and another who just SIR'd to UCLA - both in engineering. I think the engineering departments at both schools are similar and both are rated very highly. You should really attend the school you prefer to attend since you'll be the one committing the next 4-5 years to it and be the one doing all the work. If you end up in engineering (I got the impression you were thinking of EE), it'll be a LOT of work. Your Dad, however, may have some other valid reasons regarding the choice of school. If it revolves around 'ratings' be prepared to have the stats on-hand (US News ratings) to discuss with him. Keep in mind that a delta of a few ranking numbers isn't that significant.

One advantage to UCSD if you're from SD; you may be able to end up commuting if you need to. Remember that you can generally only live on campus for 2 years but there are plenty of nice apartments in the UTC area close to campus served by the UCSD shuttle.

One advantage to UCLA if you're from SD; it let's you see a new area and takes a crutch away from you which can sometimes be good.

Did you decide yet?

yes, i decided last night. i was literally doing coin tosses to see. yea, but then my dad convinced me that i should move "forward," as in go to LA, where it's harder to get into instead of moving backward to "UCSD" since its a lower ranked school. i guess he just made me realize that i worked really hard..and being that LA was harder to get into, and is the most applied university in the country, i just chose it. im still ambivalent about what im feeling. but it's too late now.

well look on the bright side:

IT'S UCLA!!! go bruins! :D :p

congratulations and welcome...i hope to see you next year.

ROMIC,

It sounds to me like you're the type of person who may benefit the most from being "out of the nest." Just don't get too whiny about life outside of the fold, and you'll be fine.

If not, just transfer. :p
