I spoke with a UC Davis counselor and he told me that completion of IGETC isn't required for Biological Science majors, and I should only focus on getting my pre-reqs done. Here's my question, if I don't do IGETC while I'm at a community college, then transfer to Davis as a science major, would I still have to complete classes for the GE requirement? Or do I just transfer and do upper divison science course?

GE requirements are US to State mandated. IGETC requirements is GE requirements from State - local which usually has like 2 or 3 more classes. IGETC is a rubber stamped certification issued from the lower division i.e. JC/CC institution. If you are already accepted into UCD and don’t plan on ever changing schools or majors and have your GE done IGETC is not necessary at that point.

This is the exception as what was posted above…

Partial credit
Students who do not complete IGETC before transferring will be required to satisfy the specific lower-division general education/breadth requirements of the UC college or school they attend. However, California community colleges may grant partial certification of IGETC to students who are missing no more than two requirements. Students submitting partial IGETC certification should complete the missing requirements at either UC or a California community college as designated by their department. Students who have been granted partial IGETC certification should not return to the community college for a full certification.

Certification

Certification of IGETC completion is the responsibility of the last community college a student attends prior to transfer.

Davis: IGETC works well for students planning for Bachelor of Arts majors with few units of lower-division preparation. Bachelor of Science degrees and high-unit majors often have many courses of lower-division preparation. In these cases, the UC Davis GE pattern is the best choice. Students in the College of Engineering who have satisfied IGETC are still required to complete two upper-division general education courses at UC Davis.

Another thing, is it required for me to take foreign language at community college? If I complete all my other pre-reqs and GE classes with the exception of a language, could I still get accepted to UC’s?

They use to do that no problem but things may have changed. They may like to see one foreign language but if those are the two missing it might worth doing partial IGETC.

I have a question. I applied last year to the ucs, but i decided to stay an extra year to shoot for UCLA. I was granted partial IGETC because i was missing two classes for the IGETC. However, i’m completing those two classes and will be certified for full IGETC by Spring '11. Do i go to my cc and fill out the IGETC sheet once again?
