If I don't get into NYU, I am not going to college.

Just kidding, but NYU is my life. I just want to go there more than anything. Words cannot convey my desire to attend NYU. So, help me out?

I am a junior in High school now and I have around a 3.25 (or 3.3) GPA UW and 3.75 Weighted, currently. I know it's low, but I won't waste your time with some lousy excuse. But, by the time my high school career is over, I will have taken around 8 AP classes:
AP World History
AP US History
AP Psych
AP English Lang
AP French
AP Stat
AP English Lit
AP Gov
...and an infinite number of honors courses. Also, I have taken french for five years. I have done pretty well on my PSATs and have been studying for the real SAT for months now. My goal is to get a 2100 or better. I just took it last week and I think I did really well. I know I can do it because I am very determined and am always quite successful on standardized exams and such. Do you think I can get into NYU? On a scale of 1-10, chance me? :) [1 being the worst and 10 being the best]

Also, getting reccommendations will be super easy because I am pretty friendly with all of my teachers and the faculty at my school (security guards, guadiance counselors, etc).

I guess ethnicity comes into play: I am African American.

Thank you everyone! It means a lot :) NYU is a dream that I hope shall come true!

Oh, and I would apply ED to either Gallatin or CAS. I am hoping to major in Mass Comm/Journalism.

And I am going to attend Virginia Girls State (sponsored by the American Legion Aux.) this summer!

Help a sistah out? :)

I think there are too many NYU horror stories on this forum right now dealing with financing the NYU experience, which may explain your lack of responses.

Your EC’s are really good, the only thing that may hold you back are your grades. I think you have a pretty good shot–in my opinion.

oh haha, i believe that is probably true!

and thanks r0kAng3l  it means a lot! i am definitely working on my grades this year and i’ll continue through senior year!

i need yo’ advice. come on, kids, let’s get this done (:

So you’re going to be a junior?

nope, i am finishing off my junior year next week (with around a 3.5ish). i’ll be a senior starting september. woot woot!

Your ECs are superb, but unfortunately, given the massive volume of apps NYU receives, they may have less influence than you’d think.

At the moment, NYU is a reach for you, but if you continue to work hard and get what you project (2100) on your SAT, I think you’ll have a decent shot, especially ED. Good luck!

If you are full pay, you’re probably fine given URM status. If you need financial aid, get the notion of NYU behind you.

Agree with Redroses. I LOVE nyu too. But they will screw you on financial aid. Seriously, that university does not care if you have $200K worth of debt or what job you get when you graduate. It’s an amazing school but, unless you’re rich, I wouldn’t do ED. Also, your being a female hurts you (it would probably negate your URM status) because there are so many females.

Rising NYU senior here. I don’t come on this forum often, but I saw this post in my “similar threads” feed. Mass Comm is NOT in CAS. Rather, it is my program, in the Steinhardt school; Media, Culture, Communications. Journalism is a REQUIRED double major and that double major MUST BE IN CAS. NO EXCEPTIONS. So you MUST declare a second CAS major if you ultimately choose journalism. If you go on the journalism website, they have the “accepted” double majors for journalism students.

Journalism is also one of the most competitive programs in CAS, with a high weed-out rate. I can say with confidence that your gender will NOT hurt you, that poster above is incorrect.

I can also say that yes, if you need significant financial aid, NYU is not for you. Our financial aid is terrible and there’s no sugar coating it.

If you do well on your SATs and ED to Gallatin and write a terrific and compelling essay and fill out the additional Gallatin supplement, you are a match. I would call ED CAS Journalism a reach, only because CAS is a little harder when it comes to pure numbers.

Ok, here’s the deal.
You would be considered URM for many, many top schools (many WAY better than NYU), and given that hook would be admited. But the problem is that as an African-American, you would not really be a URM for NYU.

This is going to sound weird, but I think you actually have a better chance at Yale, Penn, Brown, JHU or WUSTL than NYU.

@soze

Are you sure about that? African Americans are not that well-represented at NYU, they make up less than 5% of the entire student body.

OP, please listen to the above posters and don’t let yourself fall in love with NYU - they break many hearts every year and even an acceptance is not a guarantee you’ll be able to go or graduate if finances are a concern. I would suggest you also look at Syracuse - much better FA opportunities there and they have a terrific program too.

thanks everyone! more help please?

bump up your GPA to a 3.4+ and a 2000+ SAT and you should have a good chance.

bumpity bump bump.
