I want to major in Computer Science, and one of the schools I plan on applying to is USC due to its great CS program. But recently I realized that not only do I have to get accepted into USC, but I have to get into USC Viterbi School of Engineering? From what it looks like, USC Viterbi School of Engineering is where people do their CS majors. But apparently it's hard to get in. If I get into USC, but don't get into USC Viterbi School of Engineering, does that mean I can't major in Computer Science? I'm really worried and mad I didn't learn about this until today.

The BS in Computer Science (CSCI) is part of the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences
The BS in Computer Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) is in Viterbi.

So you can do the first one without being in Viterbi.

What is the difference between the two schools?

I would double check on that info because the website shows that CSCI and CECS are both in Viterbi.
[Department Of Computer Science - USC](http://www.cs.usc.edu/admissions/undergrad/default.htm)

The only Computer Science available in CLAS is Physics/Computer Science-
[USC Catalogue: The Schools: USC College of Letters, Arts and Sciences: Physics and Astronomy: Undergraduate Degrees](http://www.usc.edu/dept/publications/cat2008/schools/college/phys/undergraduate.html)

OP- one way to compare the schools/majors is to look at the required classes for each.

So, am I seeing this right? I’m not interested in doing CS/Physics, so the only way I could do Computer Science at USC is if I get into Viterbi?! Does anyone know exactly how hard it is to get into Viterbi? How many students are enrolled there?

I’m not really too sure how difficult it is to get into Viterbi, but if you don’t get into Viterbi at first but DO get into CLAS as undeclared, you should be able to apply to be in Viterbi later on.

MagicaMalik-
This is great that you are researching this now. Use the Advanced Search function above to browse old threads about Viterbi. You will find that it is ranked high and yes, admission is very competitive. But since it is so good, it is worth a try. Here’s one to get you started-
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/526251-engineering-usc.html?highlight=viterbi+hard

Browse the stats of the students accepted to Viterbi for Fall 2009-
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/642272-stats-only-usc-decisons-2009-a.html?highlight=computer+science

You can also start a thread that asks current students specific questions about Computer Science. I think mdcissp’s son (an active member here) is doing that so hopefully she can add some info.

Good luck!

Viterbi has both a CS major, a combined CS/Business major and a major in CS/Computer Engineering. There is also a major which incorporates Games (i.e. video game design). CS/Physics at CLAS is news to me (does it exist? Check the USC web site). Last year, when my son applied for 2008-2009, I heard there were 4,000 applicants for Viterbi and 400 were accepted. I think one of the best things about Viterbi is that there is a Freshman academy class where the students explore every area of Engineering offered at Viterbi in case you change your mind about majors. If you want Viterbi, you really need to start from day one at Viterbi in order to take the Freshman Academy class. Also, many majors at Viterbi have a lot of required classes and need you to be there all 4 years unless you come in with the right AP classes and/or community college classes.
I heard that Viterbi has a high retention rate. The main advantage of Viterbi is that it is new and offers small classes plus a variety of options within Viterbi.

It’s not difficult to get into Viterbi when you are already a USC student. I applied as non-declared, and was able to transfer into Viterbi effortlessly - by effortlessly, I mean no bureaucratic nonsense. Just make sure you have a respectable GPA.

On the Viterbi website it says this, so I don’t know:

BS in Computer Science (CSCI)

The Computer Science major at USC provides you with a well-rounded Computer Science education. It leads to a Bachelors of Science degree in the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

idlaunva- Thanks for finding that. Would you please provide a link?

I just clicked the “Department Of Computer Science - USC” link that you linked to in your post up there

MrGorilla,
What are the criteria to transfer to Viterbi once into USC? What is respectable GPA requirement would be like?
Thanks

This is a 4 year old thread, it would be better to post in an active engineering thread. Besides, mrgorilla has probably left the jungle.
