On the application, I marked ECE as my preferred department, because if you ever want to do electrical engineering at Carnegie Mellon you have to select it on your application. However, I was wondering if you don't make the cut for ECE, can you still be admitted to the school but without the option for electrical engineering? Or is it an all or nothing deal? I'm not dead set on this for a major and would hate to lose the chance of attending Carnegie Mellon at all just because I put ECE on my application. There was no space to put alternate department, just alternate schools.

Of course! It’s called restricted CIT. You can declare any major besides ECE, but they won’t reject you just because you got rejected from ECE (I was restricted at first)

I believe if you do well your first term you can try to get the restriction lifted, so you can then take Intro ECE in the spring. If enough people don’t do the major and you got an A you can possibly get a spot in the department, as well.

Thanks! I couldn’t find a very clear answer on their website. This makes me feel a lot better.
