If I failed a class will Yale still accept me???

LOL jk.

Hi, guys!

I'm a white male from rural Georgia (about an 1 1/2 hours southeast of Atlanta). My family makes less than 50k a year. I'm gay (if that helps?).

I attend a ho-hum public school; I'm third in my class out of 260. My unweighted GPA is 3.98; my weighted GPA is 4.4 or 4.5 (can't remember specifics right now).

SAT - 2220
Critical Reading - 770
Math - 660
Writing - 790

SAT subject tests - Literature (750) and U.S. History (760)

Freshman Year
1st Semester - Newspaper (A+), Advanced World History (A+), Math I Accelerated (B+), Advanced Biology (A+)
2nd Semester - Newspaper (A+), AP Human Geo (A+), Advanced English (A+), Business Essentials (A+)

Sophomore Year
1st Semester - AP US History (A+), Advanced English (A+), PE/Health (A+), Yearbook (A-)
2nd Semester - Math II Accelerated (A-), Chemistry (A), AP US History (A+), Yearbook (A+)

Junior Year
1st Semester - Math III Accelerated (A-), AP Lang (A+), Spanish I (A), Yearbook (A+)
2nd Semester - Spanish II (A), AP Lang (A+), AP Government (A+), Yearbook (A+)

Senior Year [currently]
1st Semester - Spanish III (A+), AP Lit (A+), Advanced Physics (A), Yearbook (A+)
2nd Semester - AP Environmental Science (A), AP Lit (A+), AP Statistics (A-), Yearbook (A+) (I am also taking AP Econ online.)

I got a 4 in AP Human, a 4 in APUSH, a 5 in AP Lang, a 5 in AP Gov, and the other tests are pending.

ECs - I am editor of the yearbook and have been since junior year. Prior to that, I was the copy editor. I’m also president of Gavel Club, a public speaking organization that derives from Toastmasters International. My junior year I co-founded our school’s literary magazine, which was inspired by Tavi Gevinson and Rookie magazine. My friend and I serve as co-editors. I am the president of the National English Honor Society, which I helped found, and I am also occasionally involved in Model U.N. I am a member of the National Honor Society and the Youth Advocacy Board, a group composed of the best students from around the county who advocate for local teens. I recently spearheaded a campaign to end abstinence education in our county and get people involved in discussion about contraception. I also hold a part-time job as a host/waiter at a local restaurant.

I attended the Georgia Governor's Honors Program in Communicative Arts, I'm an AP Scholar with Honor, and I won a regional Silver Key in Poetry for the Scholastic Arts & Sciences Competition. I also received a full scholarship from CNN to attend the Georgia Journalism Academy held at the University of Georgia. I also frequently publish for Huffington Post Teen. This past summer I lived with my aunt in San Francisco and worked for a local publication.

I'm confident in both my essays and teacher recommendations.

I hope to major in English/creative writing, journalism, or international studies. I want to continue writing (and most likely venture into journalism), but I'd also like to work in international affairs and focus on sexuality, health, and access to contraception in developing nations.

Can you chance me for Oberlin, NYU, Princeton, Emory, and UNC - Chapel Hill? I chance back!

Please answer! I chance back :)

I don’t think your sexuality will affect your admission into any of the schools, unless you write a very good essay about the subject (then I guess it would technically help, but not really). And the good news is all of the schools you’ve listed seem to be quite accepting of gay people.

Now, as for your chances, I think you have a very good shot at UNC-CH and NYU. Princeton and Emory have pretty bizarre admissions tendencies, so it’s tough to tell; but your chance is as good as most. And, to be honest, I don’t know a thing about Oberlin.
Good luck!

I would say
Oberlin Match
NYU Match
Emory Low/Match
Princeton High Match/Reach
UNC High Match/Reach

I would say you have a good chance at most of them. Hard to say with Princeton and UNC admissions is still a crapshoot even for the most qualified.

Princeton: Reach
UNC: High match (you may as well aim for Duke)
NYU: Match
Emory: Match
Oberlin: Match

Do you have a safety? UGA/GA Tech?

I don’t understand any of what the others have said. Your stats are GREAT. Your chances, according to me (and I am very confident about this), are:

NYU - Low match
UNC - Match
Emory - Low match
Oberlin - Match
Princeton - Reach (regardless of what you have, HYPMSC are always reaches)

Catria, UGA is my safety!

Killforstern, thanks! :)

Evidently, there is some grade inflation at your school, particularly in AP Human Geo and APUSH. Anyone getting an A+ in an AP class should easily get a 5, IMO. At my school, even kids who get Bs in Human Geo usually get 5s on the AP Test. Perhaps my school is grade deflating, or it may be a combinarion of both.

NYU - Low match
UNC - Match
Emory - Low Match
Oberlin - ???
Princeton - High Reach

Out of that list I think you should do UNC but that’s slightly biased because its the only one consistent with my list haha

Chance me back?

How does one go about writing for the Huff Post?

I agree with mostly what everyone else has said. Princeton definitely reach, and UNC maybe reach/match.
