I’m currently a senior in high school. I live in California and I’m looking to go to a CSU (maybe UC) in Fall 2020. However, I struggled a lot in AP Chemistry my junior year and ended up getting a D+ for the fall semester and an F for the spring semester. My plan is to retake both semesters in evening school. The rest of my grades are good, mostly A’s and B’s, and my overall GPA is a 3.6. My SAT score is an 1140, my English score was around 700 and my math score… not so great. I’m going to retake it and get my results back before applications are due, though. I’m involved in extracurriculars like marching band and some school clubs. What are my chances of getting into a CSU/UC?
@sasukay: So you will plan to have your repeat grades on your transcript by November 30th, the CSU/UC application deadline? Are you retaking the exact same course AP Chemistry?
What is your current CSU capped weighted/UC capped weighted GPA as calculated with this link: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
@Gumbymom Using the link you provided, my weighted and capped GPA is a 3.65. Also, yes I will have my repeat grades on my transcript by November 30th. The class I’ll be taking will show up as a “retake” on my transcript as AP Chemistry, but since it’s evening school, I’ll be taking a regular chemistry course.
@sasukay: Are your D and F included in the GPA calculation?
Also, not sure how a regular chemistry course will be designated as an AP course on your transcript? Regular chemistry does not replace AP.
For the UC’s, you have to report both the original AP Chemistry grade and the new Chemistry grade but the repeat grade will be used if it is the EXACT same class.
For the CSU’s, you would only report the repeat class grade if the class is the EXACT same class.
I would definitely verify that the repeat class is an AP Chemistry course.
The Cal states admit by major and eligibility index.
Using your 3.65 GPA and 1140 test score, your EI is (3.65 x800) + (1140) which equals a 4060 EI.
This should make you competitive for most of the Cal States. Exceptions are Cal Poly SLO, San Diego State and possibly Cal State Long Beach.
Your local Cal state would most likely be a safety.
For the UC’s, your best chances would be UC Merced, Riverside and possibly Santa Cruz.
2018 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79 capped weighted and not major specific:
UCB: 1%
UCLA: 2%
UCSD: 7%
UCSB: 8%
UCI: 7%
UCD: 14%
UCSC: 33%
UCR: 49%
UCM: 82%
2019 Data:
25th - 75th percentiles for SAT totals:
UCB: 1340-1540
UCLA: 1330-1550
UCSD: 1300-1520
UCSB: 1280-1520
UCD: 1230-1490
UCI: 1250-1510
UCSC: 1200-1450
UCR: 1130-1400
UCM: 1020-1290
Hopefully you’re applying for a Humanities major?
@MYOS1634 I’m applying as a human development/child and adolescent development major. Would that help my chances?
@Gumbymom My D and F are included in the calculation. Also, I’ll check in with the school to verify that AP Chemistry class! Do you have any more advice on what I could do to raise my chances of getting into a CSU like San Jose or Sacramento? They’re my local Cal States and I would definitely appreciate any guidance or reassurance haha.
@Sasukay: If you are local to San Jose State, you should get a 0.25 GPA bump which puts your EI at 4260 which is well within your major threshold of 2975. Even without that bump your EI is competitive for both SJSU and Sac State and I would say the are your Safety schools. If your CSU Capped weighted includes the D and F and you are still at 3.65, then the rest of the CSU’s other than the top CSU’s I listed in post #3, are well within your Reach. The UC’s will be tougher and I would target the 3 mentioned before: Merced, Riverside and Santa Cruz if your major is available.
