I have been waitlisted at Columbia, Georgetown, Northwestern, WashU, and Boston College. Let's say I get off of one waitlist and choose to accept the spot and lose the deposit at my current choice. Then, if I later hear from another school that I am off their waitlist, can I turn down the first waitlist school for the later, granted I would probably lose that deposit too? Is there a rule against that for any of the above schools?

why not? Is there a contract that says you cannot? Of course you lose your deposit.

That’s a lot of lost deposits! but it will be worth it in the long run to go where you want! :)

I think they usually give you a week to decide.

They don’t usually give you a week to decide. Because they want to complete their class as soon as possible, they usually only give you a couple of days to decide.

Yes, it’s fine to accept an offer of admission off the waitlist and then withdraw your accept if you get an offer from a school you would prefer.

You can accept as many schools as you want, as long as you do it one at a time. I always like to use the analogy of “engagement.” You should only be engaged to one person at a time, but until you get married you could change your engagement as many times as you want. You could lose many engagement rings…But after you get married you could still get divorced (transfer).

A girl at son’s h.s. last year put her deposit down at Northwester, got into Duke off the waitlist and withdrew from Northwestern and deposited at Duke, then got into Harvard off the waitlist. She is now at Harvard. All of this occurred by the second week in May, by the way. Luckily, her parents could afford losing two deposits.
