If I got a 4.0 in Santa Monica Community College how likely is admission

I did not do good in high school, during the midst of covid, and the start on the online year, my sophomore year, I had signed up for ap modern world history and had failed it, my grades since then have been incredibly good, in the second semester junior year, but my cumulative gpa is only a 3.515 UW, needless to say I couldn’t get usc admissions with that or an f on my transcripts

But, after doing research and seeing the smc is the number one feeder school for usc and ucs, if I got a 4.0 there, taking the hardest classes I can, how likely am I to be admitted, Ik I can do it so

The only people who would know that would be the USC admissions committee. Grades aren’t the only thing that USC looks at when they review an application. They will ask you for your HS transcript and your Personal Statement.

Another question is whether you can afford to attend the university? As a transfer, financial aid may be limited.

I can, saving up, outside music scholarships, etc.

I thought that for junior transfers, after 64 units, they don’t look at your high school transcripts, and that gpa became the most important factor, I’ve done some research, and that’s what other people have said, that a 4.0 puts you in an amazing position for acceptance of transfers

The professors at Santa Monica really care about the students! They do have a great transfer record. Get good grades, and get involved in the school (clubs etc.) I say go for it!

@gamerboy80 I recall from a previous thread that you have a particular interest in Thornton. Thornton has different, more restrictive, transfer requirements than USC as a whole does. Please see the link below, and I would definitely reach out to Thornton to get any specific questions answered before you go down this path.

Here is USC’s transfer admission profile: https://admission.usc.edu/wp-content/uploads/Transfer-profile.pdf

Santa Monica College was actually the biggest source of transfer students (about 10% of the total) for 2020-2021.

Also, I believe from your previous posts that you think you are very strong musically and that your biggest hurdle is your admission to USC. Thornton is very, very competitive and I would not base your academic plans upon an assumption that you will get admitted to Thornton after doing well at SMC. If you have switched your goals to science, as you also had previously reported, then transferring from SMC might work out very well for you.

I do like both thornton and science, and thornton seems like a dream, but, idk how good of an idea it is, majoring in music, I’m kind of conflicted on if it’s worth it, I know I can do a very good audition for thornton, and I know that could help, but still, majoring in music, I don’t know if I could transfer out of thornton to dornsife at all, or even if I’d want to do that since that’s kind of crummy, and majoring in science does sound like a better outcome post grad, which is why I want to go to smc, and transfer to usc dornsife, even tho I feel very confident in a thornton audition

Their Common Data Set shows that they will request the HS transcript. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they will use it, however, because you have shown an upward trend. It just means that they will request it.

Depends on what science. There are so many biology majors graduating (many of them pre-meds who did not get into any medical school) that finding a biology-related job at the BA/BS level will be very competitive, and pay is not so good. The mathematical sciences (applied math and statistics) and computer science are the sciences that have the strongest major-related job prospects at the BA/BS level.

Considering you are a high school junior who lives in Oregon, there are too many things that need to align and work out perfectly for this to even be an option. You need a back up plan.

In your previous thread, you mentioned some safeties. Are you planning on applying to them or are you putting all of your eggs in one basket to try to get into USC.

Yes I do, I plan on just applying to four schools after high school (at least right now) and seeing how that works out, u of o uw usc nyu, but if I get rejected by all but u of o, I plan to just go to community college and try again

For your applications next year, are you planning on USC Thornton or USC Dornsife? If Thornton, as was mentioned in your other thread, you should be working very hard now at perfecting your prescreen and audition materials.

Wishing you the best!

Edited to specify that my question is about applications for next year, not after CC.

For next year, i think I’ll only apply to thornton because that’s the only school I have a shot at, as much as I want to do dornsife, my academics being subpar and my only extracurricular being music, thornton is the only possibility to me

Just to make sure you know – Thornton and USC work together. You have to be accepted academically by USC as well as musically by Thornton. You might want to wait until you have the strongest application you can put together, because it is usually not very likely to be accepted in the future if you’ve been denied in the past.
