If I got Berkeley, but having poor pre-req gpa. Can I major in Econ?

Assuming that I got Cal, Econ major, with overall gpa 3.6, but my pre-req gpa is like 3.0 or lower. Can I declare a major in Econ? I know that I might have a slight chance to get in but just in case. I'm afraid about this because Econ is a competitive major; I'm not sure there are any cutoff GPA for declaring a major.

I do not know how it works for sure. However, I would think if they accept you to Cal for pre-Econ, it is based on you being a shoe-in for the actual Econ major once you transfer.

I could be dead wrong. Hopefully an actual Cal transfer can shine some light on this situation.

I’m a Cal Econ transfer. There is no concrete cutoff for the Econ major but they do say anyone with below a 3.1 in prereqs should submit an optional personal statement with their major application. Coincidentally, that application is actually due for me today. It’s online: http://www.econ.berkeley.edu/econ/ugrad/fall09app.pdf

i talked to the econ advisor. Pretty much anything below 2.7 is auto reject.

Also you might find this email that the econ department just sent out to be interesting:

"This email hereby confirms that we have received your application to the Economics Major for Fall 2009. We have received a record number of applications this semester, and it will take us some time to review them all. Your patience is appreciated. I will use this email listserve periodically throughout the semester to disseminate information specific to intended economics students, and for promotion of events that might be of interest to you all.

Here are some important notes about the application review process:

IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY TAKING ANY OF THE PREREQUISITE COURSES IN FALL, I will hold your application until grades are in, which will be sometime in early January. You’ll get an email from me with further instructions in early January. ALL NOTIFICATIONS WILL BE BY EMAIL. YOU MUST KEEP ALL PREREQUISITE COURSES FOR A LETTER GRADE; changing a prerequisite to P/NP this semester will result in the automatic denial of your major application, regardless of your other grades.

IF YOU ARE FINISHED WITH ALL THE PREREQUISITE COURSES, we /might/ review applications during the course of the semester, but most will be held until the end of the semester. You’ll get an email from me with further instructions in early January. ALL NOTIFICATIONS WILL BE BY EMAIL.

I will send you an email prior to Phase I registration for Spring 2010 with information about course registration.

If you are no longer interested in the Economics Major, please let me know by email so that I can remove your application from consideration."

This is something you probably shouldn’t even be thinking about until you get in though.
