I was graduated from high school in Thailand. My native language’s not English. My transcript’s evaluated.
I’ve heard if I have GED,that means I’ve graduated from US high school and no need to take an English proficiency test?
Having a GED is not the same as graduating from a US high school. A GED is obtained by passing an exam; a high school diploma is obtained by completing 4 years of coursework.
While every college or university sets their own requirements for admission, a GED is not normally accepted as a substitute for the TOEFL for non-native speakers. The GED exams don’t have listening or speaking sections, for example.
In contrast, most colleges would waive the TOEFL requirement for non-native speakers who have attended an American high school. These applicants have already demonstrated that they can function in an English-speaking classroom.
Your transcript has been evaluated. Find out what the colleges you are applying to will require of you. Some will accept a certain SAT or ACT score instead of the TOEFL. Almost all will accept the IELTS instead of the TOEFL. Some will accept other exams (TOEIC, Michigan, etc.). Many will allow you to enroll in their own Academic English program for a semester or two before enrolling in regular classes, and you won’t need the TOEFL, just the exams from that program.
I teach GED prep students here in the US. They all dropped out of school at some point, and now need to take the exam series in order to get their high school equivalency diploma. The exam series is not easy at all. Many of my students are immigrants who are still learning English. They will need to take the TOEFL or other English proficiency exams if they want to go to college in the US.
