I live in Washington DC, I've been told that we get in state tuition for for any public state school. However, I've also been told that we get $10,000 towards college. Do we get either? Do we even get any money towards college? Does anything happen?

Neither of those things are true. There are only two situations in which you automatically get money for college: you get to pay in-state tuition for public schools, and if your family is poor enough you qualify for a Pell grant. (Some municipalities do have their own scholarship programs, but I’ve never heard of an unconditional one.)

Google Search: District of Columbia college access program. There is a $10,000 grant at “participating public colleges” and other money available for private colleges within the local region.

Because DC only has one public university within its borders, DC provides more flexibility to use its college grant program at colleges outside of DC.

(Many states only allow their college grants to be used in-state, or greatly reduce the size of the grant if they are used out of state.)
