If I report a first choice school...

The order in which the notifications are done are

 1. Corporate starting March 8th
 2. NMSC’s own scholarship starting March 24th
 3. College Scholarships starting April 27

Please note they are in batches, so even though Corporate starts on March 8th, it could go beyond March 24th. But a student will get only one offer. If they get a corporate one they will not get anything else i.e. NMSC or the Official portion of the college scholarship. (Also to note is the special scholarships. Let us say a Company gives 5 scholarships and there are only three NMF’s eligible but there were 6 commended students who did not make it to NMF. The Company through NMSC may give two more students scholarships but they are are special scholarships and not NMSC scholarships and hence corporate scholarships may go on for some time).

Here is the official time table for 2011

January 23 Selection committees begin choosing Merit Scholarship award winners
February 1 NMSC mails notification to high school principals about the status of their Semifinalists; a Certificate of Merit is provided for each Semifinalist who qualifies as Finalist
February 8 NMSC notifies Finalists of their status at their home addresses
March 1 Finalists who have reported a sponsor college as first choice by this date will be included in the first group referred to the institution for scholarship consideration
March 9 NMSC begins mailing corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship offers to winners at their home addresses
March 24 NMSC mails offers of National Merit $2500 Scholarships
April 27 NMSC begins mailing offers of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards
(see NOTE on page 3)
May 31 Deadline for NMSC to receive reports of college choice for identifying the final group of candidates for college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards

Above was the official time table in their (NMSC’s) leaflet, they may have started notifying earlier, so if some has received something already, NMSC has changed the time line.

Also mommylaw’s child was a National Achievement winner, I do not know if they have a different time table for National Achievement as opposed to National merit, those are two different scholarships.

Mom2collegekids children (at least I think) received the scholarship in a previous year, not this year, at least that is my impression, I may be wrong.

Mommylaw you are right you can make any number of changes but I think your child needs to make it before May 31st, in other words there is a deadline.

Thank you mazewanderer. I got confused with the dates that NMSC sends letters and makes the public announcements…appreciate you knowledge & help.

What if both of the student’s parents work at companies that have corporate scholarships? I know they can’t get both. How do you think NMSC decides which?

I have not heard of this situation before though I can see it happening more often than we think. I would hope they would give the student the best of the two, but I don’t know.
